Textbook: “Thermal Physics”, C. Kittel/H. Kroemer.

Supplementary Text: “Statistical Physics”, F. Mandl.


“Statistical Mechanics; a set of lectures”, R.P. Feynman.

Course description: Entropy and Temperature. Thermal equilibrum and Boltzmann distribution. Ther-
mal radiation and Planck distribution. Chemical potential and Gibbs distribution.
Ideal gas. Heat and Work. Chemical reactions. Fermi and Bose gases. Semicon-
ductors.

Prerequisites: PHYS 205: Elementary knowledge of quantum mechanics and probability theory.

Homework: Weekly homework followed by a quiz during the PS hour.

Attendance: Active participation is strongly encouraged and may be awarded with some bonus
points at the end of the semester.

Grading: Homework 25%, Midterm I 25%, Midterm II 25%, Final 25%.

Makeup-Exam Policy: If you have a valid medical excuse that prevents you from taking a midterm exam
and which is approved by the university health center, you will be entitled to take a
makeup exam for each missed midterm at the end of the semester during the make-
up dates. The makeup exam is comprehensive and includes ALL topics covered
during the semester.
Additional Remarks:

Academic dishonesty in the form of cheating, plagiarism and collusion are serious offenses and will not be toler-
ated at Koç University. University Academic Regulations and the Regulations for Student Disciplinary Matters
clearly define the policy and the disciplinary action to be taken in case of academic dishonesty.

Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying from a classmate or providing answers or information, either
written or oral to others. Plagiarism is borrowing or using someone else’s writing or ideas without giving written
acknowledgment to the author. This includes copying from a fellow student’s paper or from a text without properly
citing the source. Collusion is getting unauthorized help from another person or having someone else write one’s
paper or assignment.
