ECONOMIC LOAD DISPATCH USING HEURISTIC
TECHNIQUE
1. Introduction
The demand for energy is continuously growing, and with this, optimizing the generation and
distribution of electrical power becomes crucial. One of the most important problems in power
system operation is Economic Load Dispatch (ELD). The objective of ELD is to determine the
optimal generation levels of power plants to meet the required load demand at the minimum
possible cost, while satisfying the operational constraints.
2. Research Gap
Traditional methods for solving the Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) problem, such as linear
programming and gradient-based techniques, often fall short when dealing with the
nonlinearities, non-convexities, and complex constraints of modern power systems. While
heuristic techniques like Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)
have shown promise, there is still a lack of comprehensive studies comparing their performance
and efficiency in real-world scenarios. Moreover, the integration of multiple objectives (e.g.,
cost, emissions) and consideration of dynamic power system constraints have not been fully
explored. This project seeks to address these gaps by investigating the effectiveness of heuristic
methods in handling realistic, multi-objective ELD problems.
The growing global energy demand, rising fuel costs, and the need for efficient power
generation drive the motivation for this project. Traditional methods for Economic Load
Dispatch (ELD) struggle with the complexity of modern power systems, which are nonlinear
and constrained. Heuristic techniques like Genetic Algorithms and Particle Swarm
Optimization offer a more robust and flexible approach to solving the ELD problem, providing
2
cost-effective and efficient solutions. This project aims to explore these techniques to optimize
power generation, reduce operational costs, and improve energy efficiency in power systems.
The objective of this project is to implement and analyze heuristic techniques, such as Genetic
Algorithms (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), to solve the Economic Load
Dispatch (ELD) problem in power systems. The goal is to minimize generation costs while
satisfying system constraints. Additionally, the project aims to compare the performance of
these techniques with traditional methods and explore their effectiveness in handling real-world
power system challenges, including multiple objectives and operational constraints.
