Waves – 8 Marks
Problems:
1. A closed organ pipe 70cm long is sounded. If the velocity of sound is 331 m/s, what is the
fundamental frequency of vibration of the air column?
2. A pipe 30cm long is open at both ends. Find the fundamental frequency. Velocity of sound
in air is 330ms.
3. A open organ pipe 85 cm long is sound. If the velocity of sound is 340 m/s, what is the
fundamental frequency of vibration of the air column?
4. A rocket is moving at a speed of 200ms-¹ towards a stationary target. While moving, it emits
a wave of frequency 1000 Hz.. Calculate (1) the frequency of the sound as detected by the
target
5. Two organ pipes of lengths 65cm and 70cm respectively, are sounded simultaneously. How
many beats per second will be produced between the fundamental frequencies of the two
pipes ?
6. A stretched wire of length 0.6 m is observed to vibrate with a frequency of 30 Hz in the
fundamental mode. If the string has a linear mass of 0.05 kg/m, find
(a) the velocity of propagation of transverse waves in the string,
(b) the tension in the string.
7. A steel wire 0.72m long has a mass of 5.0×10-3 kg. If the wire is under a tension of 60N,
What is the speed of transverse waves on the wire?
8. A string has a length of 0.4m and a mass of 0.16g. If the tension in the string is 70N. What
are the three lowest frequencies it produces when plucked?
9. A vertical tube is made to stand in water so that the water level can be adjusted.Sound waves
of frequency 320 Hz are sent into the top of the tube. If standing waves are produced at two
successive water levels of 20cm and 73cm, what is the speed of sound waves in the air in
the tube?

10. A train sounds its whistle as it approaches and crosses a level-crossing. An observer at the
crossing measures a frequency of 219 Hz as the train approaches and a frequency of 184 Hz
as it leaves. If the speed of sound is taken to be 340 m/s. Find the speed of the train.

Ray Optics and Optical Instruments – 4 Marks and 2 marks


Problems:
1. A light wave of frequency 4x10" Hz and a wavelength of 5x10m passes through a
medium. Estimate the refractive index of the medium.
2. Two lenses of power -1.75D and +2.25D respectively, are placed in contact. Calculate the
focal length of the combination.
3. What focal length should the reading spectacles have a person for whom the least distance
of distinct vision is 50 cm.
4. A concave mirror of focal length 10 cm is placed at a distance 35 cm from a wall How far
from the wall should an object be placed so that its real image is formed on the wall?
5. A concave mirror produces an image of a long vertical pin, placed 40 cm from the mirror,
at the position of the object. Find the focal length of the mirror (Mar-20'TS)
6. The focal length of a concave lens is 30cm. Where should an object be placed sothat its
image is 1/ 10 of its size?
7. A double convex lens of focal length 15 cm is used as a magnifying glass in order to
produce an erect image which is 3 times magnified. What is the distance between the
object and the lens?
Wave Optics – 4 Marks
Problems:
1. Two slits are made one millimeter apart and the screen is placed one meter away. What is
the fringe separation when blue - green light of wave length 500nm is used?
2. What should the width of each slit to obtain 10 maxima of the double slit pattern within
the central maximum of the single slit pattern?

3. 3. In a Young's double slit experiment, the slits are separated by 0.28 mm and the screen is
placed 1.4m away. The distance between the central bright fringle and the fourth bright
fringle is measured to be 1.2cm. Determine the wave length of light used in the

4. What is the Brewster angle for air to glass transition? (Refractive index of glass = 1.5)
5. Estimate the distance for which ray optics is good approximation for an aperture of 4mm
and wavelength 400nm.

1. An electric dipole with dipole moment 4×10−9 C-m is aligned at 30∘ with the direction of
a uniform electric field of magnitude 5×104NC−1. Calculate the magnitude of the torque
acting on the dipole.
2. What is the force between two small charges of 2×10−7C and 3×10−7C placed 30 cm apart
in air?
3. An infinite number of charges each of magnitude q are placed on x - axis at distances of
1,2, 4, 8, ... meter from the origin. The intensity of the electric field at origin is…………

1. Three capacitors of capacitances 2pF, 3pF and 4pF are connected in parallel .
(a) What is the total capacitance of the combination?
(b) Determine the charge on each capacitor if the combination is connected to a 100V
supply.
2. A 12pF capacitor is connected to a 50V battery. How much electrostatic energy is stored
in the capacitor?
3. In a hydrogen atom the electron and proton are at a distance of 0.54° The dipole moment
of the system is.

1. Write the color code of a carbon resistor of resistance 23 kilo ohms.

Semiconductor Electronics– 4 Marks and 2 Marks

If the load resistance of 2K ohms is used in the circuit, then find the efficiency of this
half wave rectifier.
2. A full wave p-n junction diode rectifier uses a load resistance of 1300 ohm. The
internal resistance of each diode is 9 ohm. Find the efficiency of this full wave
rectifier.
3. Calculate the current amplification factor ẞ (beta) when change in collector current
is ImA and change in base current is 20 μ. Α.
4. 4 For a transistor amplifier, the collector load resistance 2K ohm and the input
