Office Hours: Tuesdays 9:00–10:00 a.m. and Thursdays 10:00–11:00 a.m. (EST) via zoom (starting Septem-
ber 7, 2023). Students are encouraged to submit their questions for office hours ahead of time, by email to:

• D. Bertsimas and J. Tsitsiklis, Introduction to Linear Optimization, Athena Scientific, 1997.

Course Outline and Key Dates


Linear optimization: Farkas’ Lemma, duality, Simplex method, geometry of polyhedra, weak and strong duality.
Combinatorial optimization: Network simplex and flow problems, shortest path, assignment problem. Continuous
optimization: convex sets, convex functions, analytic characterizations of convexity, Karush-Kuhn-Tucker Theorem.
Sept. 6, 2022: Classes begin.
Dec. 5, 2022: Classes end.

Evaluation
Homework: 30%
Details: Homework 1–10: (lowest two HW grades are dropped).
Midterm 25% If for whatever reason you miss the midterm its weight will be shift towards the final exam or the
assignments, whichever will result in a higher final grade.
Final exam: 45%

Passing Critera: course grade of ≥ 50%

Homework (30%)
Homework must be submitted to CROWDMARK. Homework sent by email WILL NOT be accepted.
Assignments are marked for completeness, correctness, and clarity of answers. LATE ASSIGNMENTS RECEIVE
NO MARKS but may receive feedback.
You are not allowed to communicate with other students or consult any notes other than the
notes/resources provided though the course website on LEARN and related resources. Students might
be asked to acknowledge an academic integrity pledge prior to completing the homework.

Technology required
In order to engage fully with this course, students are required to have a laptop or desktop computer and a stable
Internet connection.

Academic Integrity

Discipline. A student is expected to know what constitutes academic integrity to avoid committing academic

work/collaboration should seek guidance from the course professor, academic advisor, or the undergraduate associate

Appeals. A decision made or penalty imposed under Policy 70, Student Petitions and Grievances (other than a
