Learning Task 12 Philosophy of Teaching

Desired Learning
Outcomes
 Articulate a personal philosophy of teaching that is learner-centered.
 Demonstrate behaviors that uphold the dignity of teaching as a profession by
exhibiting qualities such as caring attitude, respect and integrity.
 Seek opportunities to establish professional links with colleagues.
 Demonstrate motivation to realize professional development goals based on
the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers.

 How do we establish professional links with colleagues?
 How can your concretize the professional development goals based on the
Philippines Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST)?

Understandings

A personal teaching philosophy is a statement of beliefs and attitudes


relatives to purpose of education and role of teaching.
According to Stephen Brookfield in his book The Skillful Teacher (1990) the
development of a teaching philosophy can be used for several purposes.
 Personal Purpose – A close picture of why you are doing what you are
doing that you can call up at points of crisis. This is crucial to your
personal sanity and morals.

 Pedagogical Purpose – Knowing clearly what kind of dent/niche you
want to make in the world that you must continually ask yourself. The
fundamental evaluative questions of all: “What effect am I having on
students and their learnings?”
TIPS ON WRITING Personal Teaching Philosophy
 There is no required content or set format.
 It is 1-2 pages in length.
 Use present tense
 Avoid technical terms.
 Include teaching strategies and methods to help people “sell” in the
classroom.
 Make it memorable and unique.
 Own your philosophy.

 Reasons why you want to become a teacher


 Duties and responsibilities of an effective teacher
 Beliefs about how student learn
 Approaches methods and strategies which are needed in effective
teaching
 Views of different stakeholders in teaching and learning
 Theories or philosophies of teaching and learning that are similar to your
ideas
 Reasons why teaching is the most important profession
 Challenges/obstacles of teaching which you want to overcome

As teaching intern, how did you exhibit the qualities of caring, respect and integrity?
Cite specific situations or instances.

I have exhibit care through asking them how they are feeling that day. I also asked
them if they need help when there is an activity especially if it is individual. I also respect
them by being sensitive to their needs. I also respect their ideas, opinions and feeling about

Tasks 2: I have shown integrity by sticking to my classroom rules and teaching principles. I
am honest with their scores and there was no bias happened inside the classroom. These
qualities have helped me manage the class very well and it has resulted to good relationship.

Cite specific instances on how you establish professional links with your colleagues.

I can establish professional links with my colleagues by:


Soliciting ideas from them which can help me to improve my knowledge and
skills.
Extending my helps to my colleagues which can be a way to develop
wholesome relationship with my colleagues.
Giving my sincere opinion on a specific issue that is needed to be solved.
Showing a pleasing and kind personality towards my colleagues to keep my
dignity and integrity.
Accepting responsibilities that is given to me.
Being sensitive and flexible to the needs of my colleagues especially when
diversity is at stake.

My Personal Philosophy of Teaching

I believe that every child:


must acquire the basic knowledge in order to fully
understand the complex subject matters.
should know moral values so that they will live in a
community where respect and harmony are present.
must know how to do their best yet always put trust in God.
must be provided sufficient attention.
must be prepared for adult life.
is special in their own ways and has different intelligences.
is very capable to learn.
must never left behind.
must provided a friendly environment.

I believe that respect must always be present when it’s a about


culture and as a teacher, I should avoid any biases in my class. I
should always be humanistic so that, I can be an effective and
efficient teacher.

I believe that as a teacher, I should help them to be morally


transformed and illumined by faith.

I believe that my task as a teacher is to facilitate the
development of every child with optimum and to the maximum
by:
teaching them with an integration of moral values.
motivating the child to boost his/her self-confidence.
praising the child when he/she have done something good.
providing varied activities to make them feel excitement and
due to child’s different intelligence.
reminding the child that there is a God who is always helping
everybody so that, he/she will not feel.
any inferiority when he/she refuses to give their best.
patiently teaching them the subject matter to achieve
mastery.
telling the child to be always do his/her best in any activity.
making every child possess good character traits such as
respectful, polite, obedient, honest, loving and friendly.
telling the child to always respect anyone.
providing a friendly environment.
