ITC - Tobacco Division

ITC Limited is an Indian conglomerate company, headquartered in Kolkata. It has a presence

across six business segments, namely FMCG, hotels, agribusiness, information technology,
paper products, and packaging. It generates a plurality of its revenue from tobacco products.
In terms of market capitalization, ITC is the second-largest FMCG company in India and the
third-largest tobacco company in the world. ITC is the market leader in cigarettes in India.
With a portfolio of invaluable brands, ITC's cigarette business stands testimony to the
company's unwavering and unrivalled commitment to quality, innovation, and consumer
focus. More than one hundred years of expertise in developing products to match the
evolving taste of consumers has led to a portfolio of brands including, Insignia, India Kings,
Classic, Gold Flake, American Club, Wills Navy Cut, Players, Scissors, Capstan, Berkeley,
Bristol, Flake, Silk Cut, Duke & Royal.

During our visit to ITC's Tobacco Division, we had the opportunity to interact with key
resource persons, including Mr. Utsav and Mr. Sanjeev from HR, and Mr. Niranjan, Head of
Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS). Their insights provided us with a comprehensive
understanding of the division’s operations, compliance, and workforce structure.

ITC, known as the largest taxpayer in India, operates in a highly regulated and legal business
environment. We learned that producing one cigarette costs approximately Rs 0.30-0.40,
reflecting the efficiency and scale of the operation. This division includes the Secondary
Manufacturing Department, responsible for cigarette production and packaging, and the
Capsule Department.

A noteworthy aspect of ITC’s production process is the utilization of solar energy,

demonstrating the company’s commitment to sustainable practices.

The workforce in this division comprises 350 workers, 350 contract workers, and 100
managers, creating a well-structured team that oversees the entire operation. ITC’s Employee
Relations (ER) framework is built around four key pillars:

1. Industrial Democracy: ITC promotes the formation of trade unions, viewing them as an
essential channel for communication. The company currently has two registered trade
unions and one recognized trade union.
2. Scientific Management: A focus on efficiency and innovation in managing processes
and workforce operations.
3. Human Relations: ITC maintains long-term settlements that are renegotiated every three
years in a tripartite format, involving the company, employees, and union representatives.
4. Industrial Welfare: ITC organizes year-round activities to promote employee well-being
and engagement. Additionally, the company has established a grievance forum for
employees beyond the statutory grievance committees.

During the visit, we were taken on a tour of the tobacco factory, where we observed the entire
production process, from the handling of raw materials to the packaging of the finished
product. This provided us with valuable insights into ITC’s efficient and sustainable
manufacturing practices.
This visit underscored ITC’s commitment to legal compliance, sustainable production, and
fostering a supportive and democratic workplace culture.

TATA HITACHI

During our visit to TATA Hitachi, we had the opportunity to interact with key resource
persons including Ms. Sunita and Ms. Dolly from HR, Mr. Sidharth Sharma from the
Production Department, and Mr. Salil Srivastav, our plant visit guide. They provided us with
a comprehensive overview of the company’s operational focus and HR strategies.

TATA Hitachi is placing a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, with a particular focus
on increasing the number of female employees in the workplace. Currently, the plant has 50+
women employees, reflecting the company’s commitment to gender diversity.

The company’s workforce includes 900+ permanent workers and 1,200+ contract workers.
Their manufacturing process is highly automated, with 90% of the work done by machines
and 11 robots integrated into the process, leaving only 10% of the tasks to manual labour.
This automation enables them to assemble a vehicle in just 24 days. Sustainability is also a
key focus, with solar energy being utilized in their operations. The company’s Research &
Development (R&D) department conducts extensive testing on manufactured vehicles to
ensure reliability and durability.

For employee engagement, TATA Hitachi has several initiatives in place:

 The Women Affinity Group (WAG) is a platform for female employees to engage in
monthly discussions about workplace challenges.
 Regular health awareness camps are organized to promote employee well-being.
 Indoor and outdoor activities are conducted for both employees and their families,
fostering a strong sense of community.
 The company also runs training programs for 20 graduate women, providing
opportunities for skill development and career growth.

In terms of work-life balance, TATA Hitachi ensures that managers do not contact employees
after office hours, unless in an emergency, which sets a clear boundary for personal time. The
company is also considered a benchmark for its leave policies, offering employees 47+ days
of leave annually.

Instead of having trade unions, TATA Hitachi has established a recognized Employee
Engagement Committee, which includes representatives from various levels of the workforce,
including shop floor employees. This committee works collaboratively to discuss and make
decisions, ensuring that all voices are heard.
This visit highlighted TATA Hitachi’s forward-thinking approach to diversity, automation,
employee engagement, and sustainability, positioning it as a leader in the manufacturing
sector.
