SECTION I (50 Marks)

Answer all questions in this section

1. 1. Without using a calculator, simplify the expression (5.32 x 10^4 * 9.6 x 10^-3) / (8 x
10^2), and express your answer in standard form. (3 marks)
2. 2. Solve the trigonometric equations: 2sin(x) + cos(y) = 2 and 2sin(2x) - cos(2y) = 1,
where 0° ≤ x, y ≤ 90°. (4 marks)
3. 3. Six numbers are given with the following information: Lowest number = 37, Range =
24, Mode = 43, Median = 46, and one of the numbers is a multiple of 11. Determine the
mean of these numbers. (4 marks)
4. 4. A train traveling at 108 km/h passes completely through a station 120 meters long in
7 seconds. Calculate the length of the train in meters. (4 marks)
5. 5. A quadrilateral PQRS is such that PQ:QR = 4:1. Given that PT = PQ and angle PQS =
75°, use a ruler and compasses to construct the quadrilateral, then measure the length
of side ST. (4 marks)
6. 6. Solve the equation: (1/81)^(x-1) * (1/27)^(x+1) = 9. (4 marks)
7. 7. Two children, Ali and Mary, observe a peg located 8 meters from the base of a
building. The angles of depression from the first and second floors to the peg are 42°
and 60° respectively. Calculate the vertical distance between the two floors. (4 marks)
8. 8. A rectangle has dimensions (2x + 1) cm by (x - 1) cm. Its area is 29 cm² greater than
the area of a square with side x cm. Find the perimeter of the rectangle. (4 marks)
9. 9. In a trapezium ABCD, AB = 15 cm, AC = 13 cm, BC = 14 cm, and angle ADC = 90°.
Calculate the area of the trapezium. (4 marks)
10. 10. A frustum of a cone-shaped water tank has internal radii of 63 cm at the base and
126 cm at the top, with a height of 280 cm. Calculate the radius of the water surface
when the tank is filled to a height of 140 cm. (4 marks)

SECTION II (50 Marks)

Answer only five questions in this section

11. 17. A salesman earns a basic salary of Ksh 30,000 per month and commissions as
follows: 5% for sales up to Ksh 100,000, 6% for sales between Ksh 100,001 and Ksh
250,000, and 8% for sales above Ksh 250,000. In one month, the salesman sold goods
worth Ksh 370,000. Determine his total earnings for the month. (7 marks)
(a) How much did he earn in total? (3 marks)
(b) If the following month he earned Ksh 57,600 in total, how much did he sell? (4
marks)
12. 18. In triangle OAB, OB = 3i - 2j and AB = 4i - 10j. M is the midpoint of AB. Find:
(a) The coordinates of point A. (2 marks)
(b) The distance of point M from the origin. (3 marks)
13. 19. ABCD is a rhombus with diagonal AC. The coordinates of A and C are (-3,1) and (5,-
7). Find:
(a) The x-intercept of line AC. (3 marks)
(b) The equation of diagonal BD. (3 marks)
