HOME WORK QUESTION PAPER - II (B.TECH – 2024)

ENGINEERING MECHANICS

1. Differentiate between the angle of friction & the cone of friction.

2. The angle of cone of friction between two contact surfaces is 30 o. What is the coefficient of
friction between the surfaces?
3. What is the unit of coefficient of kinetic friction? Justify your answer.

Figure – 1

4. Referring to the figure – 1, the coefficients of friction are as follows: 0.25 at the floor, 0.30 at the
wall and 0.20 between the blocks. Find the minimum value of horizontal force P applied to the
lower block that will hold the system in equilibrium. [BPUT - 2008]
5. A uniform ladder, of weight 200 N and length 6 m, rests on a floor, with one end against a
smooth vertical wall. The foot of the ladder is at a distance of 2 meters from the wall. Find the
friction between the ladder and wall.
6. A body of weight 1 KN rests on a plane inclined at 30 o to the horizontal. If the coefficient of
friction between the body and the plane is 0.45, determine the amount of force P applied on the
body parallel to the plane to keep it in equilibrium on the inclined plane.
7. A body of weight 500 N is pulled up an inclined plane by a force of 350N as shown in figure - 2.
The inclination of the plane is 30o to the horizontal and the force is applied parallel to the plane.
Determine the coefficient of friction between body and plane.

Figure – 2
8. An object of weight 100 N is kept in position on a plane inclined 30 o to the horizontal by a
horizontally applied force F. If the coefficient of friction of the surface of the inclined plane is
0.25, determine the minimum magnitude of the force F.
9. A heavy metal bar AB rests with its lower end A on a rough horizontal floor having coefficient of
friction 0.3 and the other end B on a rough vertical wall having coefficient of friction 0.2. if the
centre of gravity of the bar is at an distance 4 m and 3 m from the ends A and B respectively.
Find the angle of inclination of the bar with the horizontal at the instance of impending motion.
10. A ladder 5 m long rests on a horizontal ground and leans against a smooth vertical wall at an
angle of 70o with horizontal, the weight of the ladder is 300 N. The ladder is on the verge of
sliding when a man weighting 750 N stands on a rung 1.5 m high. Calculate the coefficient of
friction between the ladder and the floor.
