ENGINEERING MECHANICS

1. A right circular roller of weight W rests on a smooth horizontal plane and is held in position by
an inclined bar AC as shown in figure-. Find the tension S in the bar AC and the vertical reaction
at B, if there is also a horizontal force P acting at C. [BPUT - 2007]

2. A roller of radius 40 cm and weight 3 KN is to be pulled over a rectangular obstruction of height
20 cm as shown in figure - 2, by a force P applied tangentially at the crest C through a string
wound around the circumference of the roller. Find the magnitude of the force P required just
to turn the wheel over the corner of the obstruction. Assume the surfaces to be smooth. [BPUT -
2007]
3. Two cylinders (P, Q) of diameters 100 mm and 50 mm weighting 200 N and 50 N respectively are
placed in a through as shown in figure neglecting friction and α = 45o, find the reaction at
contact surfaces A, B, C and D. [BPUT - 2006]

4. A right circular roller of radius 100 cm and weight 1 KN rests on a smooth horizontal surface and
held in position by an inclined bar AB of length 200 cm as shown in figure - 4. The roller is also
pulled by a force by a force of 2 KN inclined at an angle of 12 o to the horizontal through the
center of the roller as shown. Find the tension in the bar AB and the vertical reaction at C. [BPUT
- 2012]
5. A ball of weight W = 1 KN is suspended from the string of length l = 1 m and is pulled by a
horizontal force Q. the weight is displaced by a distance d = 0.2 m from the vertical position as
shown in figure - 5. Find the angle α, the force Q required and the tension S in the string in the
displaced position using the first principles. If the ball is in equilibrium.

6. Two spheres weighting 100 KN and 150 KN are connected by a flexible string and rest on two
mutually perpendicular planes AB and BC as shown in figure - 6. Find tension in the string which
passes freely through slots in smooth inclined planes AB and BC. [BPUT - 2014]
7. A smooth circular cylinder of radius 1 m is laying in a triangular groove, one side of which makes
30o angle and the other 60o angle with the horizontal as shown in figure - 7. Find the reactions at
the surfaces of contact, if there is no friction and the cylinder weights 50 KN. [BPUT - 2014]

8. A 80 Kg man stands on the middle rung (at D) of a ladder AB of weight 30 Kg, which is supported
on smooth wall and smooth floor as shown in figure - 8. A horizontal string CD holds the ladder
in position preventing it from slipping. Determine the tension in the string and the reaction at
the supports (AC = 4 m). [BPUT - 2014]
9. Two loads are suspended from flexible cable APQD as shown in figure - 9. Neglecting self weight
of the cable, determine the tension in segments AP, PQ and QD. Also determine the values of β
and α. [BPUT - 2013]

10. Determine the horizontal force P to be applied to a block of weight 1500 N to hold in position on
a smooth inclined plane which makes an angle of 30o with the horizontal. [BPUT - 2011]

11. A circular log of weight 1500 N and radius 20 cm is supported by a pair of bracket, which is
shown in figure-11. Bar PN, hinged at P and held by string MN is 60 cm long. To induce minimum
tension in MN determines the value of θ as shown for equilibrium. Consider all contact surface
smooth. Also find the value of minimum tension in MN. [BPUT - 2013]

12. Three cylinders A, B and C are piled up in a rectangular channel as shown in figure-12. The
weight of the cylinders are R = 30 Kg, P = 60 Kg and Q = 40 Kg respectively. The diameter of the
cylinders are DA = 8 cm, DB = 12 cm and DC = 10 cm respectively. Draw neat free body diagrams
for each cylinder then determine the reaction at the six contact points. [BPUT - 2007]
13. A roller of radius r = 500 mm and weight 4000 N is to be pulled over a curb of height 250 mm by
a horizontal force P applied to end of the string, wound tightly around the circumference of the
roller as shown in figure - 13. Find the magnitude of force P required to start the roller move the
curb. [BPUT - 2009]

14. On the string of ACEDB are hung three equal weights Q symmetrically placed with respect to the
vertical line through the midpoint E. Determine the value of the angle β if other angles are
shown in figure-14. [BPUT - 2009]
15. A prismatic bar AB of weight P = 500 N is hinged to a vertical wall at A and supported at B by a
cable BC. Determine the magnitude and direction of the reaction at the hinge A and the tension
force S in the cable BC. The directions of the bar and cable are shown in figure-15. [BPUT -

16. Determine the magnitude and direction of the smallest force P, which will maintain the body of
weight W = 300 N on an inclined smooth plane as shown in figure – 16, is in equilibrium.

17. In figure – 17, weight P and Q are suspended in a vertical plane by strings 1, 2, 3 arranged as
shown figure.
Find the tension induced in each string if P = 30 KN, Q = 40 KN, α = 40o and β = 50o. Also find the
inclination γ of segment CD to the vertical.
18. A force P is applied at point C as shown in figure – 18. Determine the value of angle α for which
the larger of the string tension is as small as possible and corresponding values of tension in the
strings 1 and 2.
19. A ball of weight W rests upon a smooth horizontal plane and has attached to its center two
strings AB and AC which pass over frictionless pulleys at B and C and carry loads P and Q
respectively as shown in figure – 19. If the string AB is horizontal, find the angle α that the string
AC makes with the horizontal when the ball is in a position of equilibrium. Also find the pressure
R between the ball and the plane.

20. A bar AB hinged to the foundation at A and supported by strut CD is subjected to a horizontal 50
KN load at B, as shown in figure – 20. Find the tensile force S in the strut and the reaction R A at
A.
