choice and carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each. Read the passage carefully and answer the
questions that follow.

Q29. The dry cell consists of a zinc container that also acts as anode and the cathode is a carbon
(graphite) rod surrounded by powdered manganese dioxide and carbon. The space between the
electrodes is filled by a moist paste of ammonium chloride (NH 4Cl) and zinc chloride (ZnCl2).
Ammonia produced in the reaction forms a complex with Zn2+
(a) How much electricity in terms of Faraday is required to carry out the oxidation of
one mole of Zinc?
(b) Why dry cell does not maintain constant voltage.
(c) Write the cathodic reaction of dry cell. Why in the construction of dry cell ,zinc
container is covered with steel. (1+1+2)

1 mole of HgO?
(b) How much of voltage is produced by this cell.
(c) Write the cell reaction of this cell. (1+1+2)

Q30. Chemical kinetics deals with rate of chemical reactions, how fast reactants get used up or how
fast products are formed in the reaction. Differed chemical reactions have different speed. Rate of
the reaction depends upon concentration of reactants, temperature, pressure especially in gaseous
reactions and presence of catalyst. Chemical reaction takes place as a results of collision between
reacting molecules. The rate of reaction does not depend upon total number of collisions rather it
depends upon number of effective collisions. In a redox reaction, if E°cell is +ve, ∆G° will be –ve
and ‘K’ equilibrium constant will be high i.e. products formed will be more than the reactants.

(a) From the graph,How the activation energy is related with energy of activated complex and
reactant energy
(b) How the slow and fast reaction is compared in terms of their activation energy?
(c) Write two factors that affect the rate of reaction.
(OR)

In the rate equation Rate = k [A]x [B]y X and Y indicate how sensitive the rate is to the
change in concentration of A and B. Sum of these exponents, i.e., X + Y in ( gives the overall order of
a reaction whereas x and y represent the order with respect to the reactants A and B respectively.

Hence, the sum of powers of the concentration of the reactants in the rate law expression is called
the order of that chemical reaction.
(a) What is the unit of K (rate constant) for zero order reaction?

(b) At what condition, the rate is equal to the rate constant?

(c) For the above rate equation, if X=2 and Y = 1, How much the rate will be changed if the
concentration of A and B are increased by twice. What is order of the reaction?
