25 (a) In the α−particle scattering experiment, if a thin sheet of solid hydrogen is used in place of a
gold foil, then the scattering angle would not be large enough. This is because the mass of
hydrogen (1.67 × 10 −27 kg) is less than the mass of incident α−particles (6.64 × 10 −27 kg). ½
Thus, the mass of the scattering particle is more than the target nucleus (hydrogen). As a
result, the α−particles would not bounce back if solid hydrogen is used in the α-particle
scattering experiment.

(a) Forward biased.
When the p-n junction is forward biased, the resistance decreases. When a forward bias is applied
to a p-n junction, it lowers the value of the potential barrier. The potential barrier opposes the
applied voltage in the event of a forward bias.
When a forward bias is applied to a p-n junction, the size of the depletion layer decreases. The
1
movement of the majority carriers takes place across the junction, resulting current, known as
forward current, which increases rapidly with increase in forward voltage.
