Introduction to computer
What is computer?

Definition-1:
“Computer is an electronic machine which accepts data as input process it and
gives us useful result as output.”

Parts of Computer
There are two main parts of computer.

I. Hardware

Definition-3:
“The combination of hardware and software is called computer.”

Hardware:
“The physical parts of computer that we can see and touch are called hardware.”
E.g. mouse, keyboard etc

Software:
“The set of instructions given to the computer to solve different problems is called
software.” It is also called computer program.

Input Unit:
 It consists of all the input devices which are used to enter data into the computer.
There are many input devices which are following:
1. Keyboard
2. Mouse
3. Microphone
4. Scanner
5. Digital camera

Keyboard:
 It is very basic input device which is used to input data (Text) into the computer by
pressing keys on it.
There are different types of keys on it:
1. Functional keys
2. Alphanumeric keys
3. Numeric keypad
4. Special keys

5. Cursor control keys(Arrow keys)

Lecture No. 4
Functional keys:
 These keys are normally on the top of the keyboard, which consist of following:
F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F8, F9, F10, F11, F12
These keys used for some specific work depend upon the software which is being used.

Alphanumeric keys:
These keys consist of alphabetic keys and numeric keys.

Alphabetic key are: A Z

Numeric keys are: 0 9

This part of keyboard is called “main keyboard”.

Numeric keypad:
 This keypad is normally on the right side of the keyboard which is used to type numeric
keys only.
This pad consists of Numeric keys and some operators for doing mathematical operation
which are given below:
Num Lock, 0 to 9, +,-,*, /.

Cursor control keys:
 These keys consist of four arrows which are left, right, up and down.

These keys are used to move cursor left, right, up and down on the screen.

Special keys:
 These keys are used to do some special tasks, which are following:
1. ESC
2. Tab

6. Alt
7. Window Button
8. Space Bar
9. Right Click
10. Enter
11. Back space
12. Home

14. Page Up

Mouse:
 Mouse is another input device which is used to enter commands into the computer by
clicking the buttons on it.
There are normally two buttons on it.
1. Left Button
2. Right Button
3. Wheel Button

Note:
Mouse is also called pointing device, because it is used to point the screen.

Events of mouse:
There are many events of mouse which are following:
1. Left Click
2. Right Click
3. Double Click
4. Scrolling
5. Drag

Left Click:
 Press left button and release it is called left click.
Right Click:
 Press right button and release it is called right click.
Double Click:
 Press left button two times quickly is called double click.
Scrolling:
 Moving wheel button up and down is called double click
Drag:
 Moving mouse left, right, up and down to move the object is called drag.

Microphone:
 It is an input device which is used to enter voice or any sound into the computer.
Scanner:
 It is also a very important input device which is used to enter
images or any document into the computer by scanning it. NOTE:
Hardcopy: “It is used to convert
hardcopy to softcopy.”
 The copy on the page is called hard copy.

Softcopy:
 The copy on the computer screen or save in computer is called softcopy.
Digital camera:
 It is also considered an input device which is used to capture the pictures, videos and into
computer by connecting it with the computer.

Output Unit:
 This unit of computer consists of all output devices which are used to
give output, in different forms.
These are different output devices given below:
1. Monitor
2. Speaker
3. Printer
4. Plotter
Monitor:
 Monitor is a very basic output device which is used to give output on the screen.

1. CRT Monitor
2. Flat Panel Monitor

CRT Monitor:
 CRT stands for “Cathode Ray Tube”. In these monitor a CRT is used to display the
output on the screen.
Flat Panel Monitor:
 These monitors are small in size and less in weight as compare to CRT monitors.
There are different Types of Flat Panel Monitors.
1. LCD
2. LED
3. Gas plasma screen
LCD:
 LCD stands for “Liquid Crystal Display”. Liquid Crystal is a material used in LCD to
display output.
LED:
 LED stands for “Light Illumination display”. In these monitor current is used to display
output.
Gas Plasma Screen:
 In these monitors gas is used in between two glasses of screen to display output.
