Flywheel Assignment-1
Flywheel Assignment-1
A steam engine runs at 150 rpm. Its turning moment diagram gave the following area measurements
in mm2 taken in order above and below the mean torque line: 500, -250, 270, -390, 190, -340, 270,
-250.
If the fluctuation of speed is not to exceed ±1.5% of the mean, determine the mass of the flywheel.
Also determine a suitable diameter and cross-section of the rim of the flywheel assuming with axial
dimension equal to 1.5 times the radial dimension. The hoop stress is limited to 3 MPa and the density
of the material of the flywheel is 7500 kg/m3
Problem 2
The turning moment diagram for a multi-cylinder engine has been drawn to a scale of 1 mm = 4500
N.m and 1 mm = 2.40 horizontally. The intercepted areas between output torque curve and mean
resistance line taken in order from one end are 342, -230, 245, -303, 115, -232, 227 and -164 mm2,
when the engine is running at 150 rpm. If the mass of the flywheel is 1000 kg and the total fluctuation
of speed does not exceed 3% of mean speed, find the minimum value of the radius of gyration.
Problem 3
The variation of crankshaft torque of a four-cylinder petrol engine may be approximately represented
by taking the torque as zero for crank angle 00 and 1800 and 260 N.m for crank angles 200 and 450, the
intermediate portions of the torque being straight lines.
The cycle is being repeated in every half revolution. The average speed is 600 rpm. Suppose that the
engine drives a machine requiring constant torque, determine the mass of the flywheel, of radius of
gyration 250 mm, which must be provided so that the total variation of speed shall be one percent.
Also determine the crank angles at which the speed has its minimum and maximum values.
Problem 4
During forward stroke of the piston of the double acting steam engine, the turning moment has the
maximum value of 1960 N.m, when the crank makes an angle of 800 with I.D.C. During the backward
stroke, the maximum turning moment is 1470 N.m, when the crank makes 800 with outer dead centre.
The turning moment diagram for the engine may be assumed to be represented by two triangles.
If the crank moves 100 rpm and the radius of gyration of flywheel is 1.75 m, find the coefficient of
fluctuation of energy and the mass of the flywheel to keep the speed ±0.75% of the mean speed. Also
determine the crank angles at which the speed has its minimum and maximum values
Problem 5
The torque delivered by a two-stroke engine is represented by
Where 𝜃 is the angle turned by the crank from inner-dead centre. The engine speed is 250 rpm. The
mass of the flywheel is 400 kg and radius of gyration is 400 m.
Determine

Problem 7
A punching press is required to punch 30 mm diameter holes in a plate of 20 mm thickness at the rate
of 20 holes per minute. It requires 6 N-m of energy//mm2 of sheared area. If punching takes place in
1/10th of a second and the speed of the flywheel varies 160 to 140 rpm, determine the mass of the
flywheel having radius of gyration 1 m.
Problem 8
A punching machine carries out 6 holes per minute. Each hole of 40 mm diameter in 35 mm thick plate
requires 8 N-m of energy/mm2 of sheared area. The punch has a stroke of 95 mm.
(i) Find the power of the motor required if the mean speed of the flywheel is 20 m/s
(ii) If total fluctuation of speed is not to exceed 3% of mean speed, determine the mass of the
flywheel
