Intercom Server GE 800

The Intercom Server GE 800 has been designed to meet the internal communication demands of large
companies and organisations. With the GE 800, different functions of modern internal communication
such as Intercom, video, information and control can be managed within a single system. By means of
different subscriber cards with different feature levels and additional interfaces, the Intercom Server
can be adapted to the individual needs with ease.
This manual describes mounting of the hardware and start-up of the Intercom Server, subscriber inter-
faces and input/output cards. Information about the interface cards and Intercom stations can be found

GE 800 2. Additional Components

2. Additional Components

General
In addition to the Intercom Server, for start up of the system the following components are required:
 Subscriber cards: Subscriber cards handle the speech communication as well as subscriber spe-
cific functions. For connection of IP-based, digital and analogue subscribers, various cards are avail-
able in four feature levels (B, C, D and P). The cards of the higher levels contain all the features of the
lower ones plus additional features. With feature level P, individual feature levels can be advised to
each subscriber.
 VoIP cards: Due to the support of wide spread standards such as the SIP or IAX protocol, various
VoIP telephones or entire VoIP telephone systems can be connected to the Intercom system as sub-
scribers with VoIP cards.
 Input and output cards: Input and output cards are used for reading in of floating contacts and/or
operating of controls such as door openers or barriers via floating relay contacts (depending on
type).
 Interface cards: By means of interface cards, external systems such as telephones, PCs or mobile
radios can be connected and integrated.
 Connection and networking cards: Via connection and networking cards, it is possible to con-
nect the Intercom Server to LAN/WAN (TCP/IP), 2-wire lines, ISDN, multiplexer/media converter or
the public telephone network. Connection: restricted features. Networking: full range of features –
Intercom Servers operate as if they were in one location.
 Installation boards: Installation boards help to connect plug-in cards e.g. with Intercom stations,
interfaces, inputs or outputs.
 Licenses: With licenses, the functionality of the Intercom Server and the plug-in cards can be ex-
panded.

NOTES: Additional components

 These components must be ordered separately according to customer’s requirements.
 For technical data of the Intercom Server cards, see current data sheet of the desired card.
 Before beginning with assembly, make sure all required components are at hand.
 For information about the configuration see manual “Intercom Server Configuration”.

GE 800 4. Cabling

Connection of multiple GE 800

G8-NET card
Multiple GE 800 Intercom Servers are connected via the Uplink and Downlink ports of the G8-NET card.
For the G8-NET card, no special configuration is necessary. A special “Discovery protocol” is used to
localise the other GE 800 Intercom Servers in the local network.

ATTENTION: Discovery protocol

To localise other GE 800 in the local network, the following IP address range is reserved:
“231.255.x.233” to “231.255.x.239” (“x” stands for the ID of the Intercom Server)!

Connection possibilities
With switch Without switch
If more than 20 servers shall be connected,
a switch is required (max. 105 GE 800). See the Up to 20 GE 800 can be connected in series
following illustration: directly via the G8-NET card (no switch
required). See the following illustration:

 No restrictions for IP subscriber cards

Advantages  Redundant connections possible (see  No additional costs
page 23)
 When one GE 800 in the chain fails, the
Disadvantages  Increased cost and power consumption
rest of the chain is disconnected as well
 Max. 20 GE 800
Restrictions  Max. 105 GE 800 in LAN  No GE 800 fully equipped with IP subscriber
cards

VLAN
If the GE 800 Intercom Servers are connected via a switch, the switch must be VLAN capable.

NOTE: VLAN requirements

The VLAN IDs “254” and “255” must be available. Depending on the type of the switch, these IDs must
be configured.

Switches with auto-negotiation

If both the Intercom Server and the switch are configured to “Autonegotiation”, in certain cases the
connection cannot be built-up. The solution for this is a fixed configuration, e.g. “100 MBit / full duplex”
(see page 27).

4.2/0617 19
4. Cabling GE 800

Network requirements
IP addresses and ports
 After initiating the server ID, the Intercom Server gets automatically an IP address.
 The communication between the Intercom Server and the IP Intercom stations requires the standard
UDP port “16400” (configuration via firewall or router, only one port for audio and signalling data).
 The communication between the Intercom Server GE 800 and the configuration software CCT 800
requires the standard TCP port “17000” (configurable).
 The communication between the ICX interface from Intercom Server (G8-GEP) and the used tool
(e.g. ComWIN) requires the standard TCP port “18000” (configurable).

QoS requirements
 One-way delay max. 100 ms
 Delay Jitter max. 50 ms
 0 % packet loss for perfect audio quality

Bandwidth

NOTES: Information to the bandwidth

 One conversation with a 16 kHz bandwidth requires a throughput of 146 kBit/s.
 A network with a capacity load of 100 MBit/s has an advisable load of 40 MBit/s. Therefore, 40 MBit/s
can be transmitted in the network. This bandwidth minus the bandwidth already used in the network
is available for the Intercom system.
 Always plan enough reserves in the bandwidth.
 For detailed information about the bandwidth, see guideline “IoIP Technology”.

ATTENTION: Network load

The connection of GE 800 Intercom Servers creates a load on the IP network with the speech and
connection data! These must be regarded when planning the system together with the network
administrator!

Example
40 MBit/s equals 270 conversations between two segments when no other load is on the network.

ed to multiple GE 700 Intercom Servers.

Limitations in mixed systems

Limitations for GE 800
 Must be inserted in the top-most GEV ring.
 Can only be connected to “ring 1” of a GE 700, no connection to “ring 2”.
 If the GE 800 is switched off, the GEV ring does not work (no relay on G8-NET).
 Only one GEV connection of a GE 800 system to a GE 700 possible.

Limitations for GE 700

 GE 700 network cards must be upgraded to at least software version 5.2.

Limitations for synchronous connections

 Works like “Ring 2” (GE 800 is always “Clock Master”).
 If CNET-W or CNET-E1 networking is used in the GE 700 system, the GE 800 may only be connected
on one side of the network (see illustration below). Otherwise, non-synchronous connections must
be used (LAN, WAN, S0).
 When G8-CNET-W or G8-CNET-E1 are connected to the GEV ring, a connection to a GE 700 is not
possible.

One-sided use of GE 800 in a network with CNET-W or CNET-E1 networking

22 4.2/0617
GE 800 4. Cabling

Network redundancy
Via the two Ethernet ports of the G8-NET, it is possible to realise a network redundancy connection. If
one of the two cables cannot establish a connection to the switch (e.g. due to a defect), the connection
automatically takes over via the second cable.

Scheme of a network redundancy

NOTE: Requirements for network redundancy

For network redundancy, the switch must support Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) functionality.

5. Configuration CCT 800

Configuration via IP or RS-232

Configuration of GE 800 Intercom Servers can be carried out via a RS-232 or a standard network cable.

NOTES: Configuration
 It is not recommended to use RS-232 to USB adapters.
 For detailed information about the configuration of features see manual “Intercom Server Config-
uration”.

IP (Ethernet)
For the configuration, connect the computer with a network cable directly to the GE 800 (Ethernet port
on the installation board G8A-NET) or with a switch within the network. A suitable Cat 5 cable with RJ45
plugs can be purchased at an electric outfitter or ordered directly under the type “ASK KAT 5”.

NOTES: Networking
 In a network the Intercom Server and the computer must be in the same subnet.
 The Intercom Server is automatically advised an IP address during initialisation (see page 26).

RS-232
For configuration via the RS-232 interface, a 9-way D-Submin extension cable is required (1:1, plug on
the Server side, jack on the computer side). This cable is connected to the 9-way D-Submin jack on the
G8-GEN or the installation board G8A-GEN. A suitable cable can be purchased at an electric outfitter or
ordered direct under the type “X-KAB-CCT”.

Networking of housings
With networking cards G8-NET, up to 105 housings can be networked to a local system in which all fea-
tures of the GE 800 are available. Additionally, multiple locations can be networked via further network
cards (e.g. G8-LAN, G8-S0 or G8-CNET-E1).

NOTES: Additional information

 The description of the individual network cards can be found in the respective manuals. Next, only
networking via the G8-NET card is described.
 In the extent of supply of the basic housing GE 800, one networking card G8-NET, one installation
board G8A-NET and one 1 m connection cable (type “ASK KAT5/1”) are included.

24 4.2/0617
GE 800 5. Configuration CCT 800

Start-up of a networked system

In networked systems, each Intercom Server housing must be advised a unique number (server ID).
There are two methods of advising each Intercom Server a server ID:
 For a maximum of 14 housings, the server IDs can be set via the DIP switches of the G8-GEP. This is
the easiest method, because the computer does not need to be connected to each single housing.
 The numbers can be set with the configuration software CCT 800, e.g. for more than 14 housings or
if the programming should be prepared in advance for an Intercom Server.

ATTENTION: Changing automatic allocated calling numbers

 The standard calling numbers that are automatically allocated to the housings must be changed if
more than 9 housings are connected! Otherwise, three-digit and four-digit numbers begin with the
same numerical sequence (e.g. “110” in housing no. 1 and “1101” in housing no. 11)!
 At full expansion with IP subscribers (14 cards with 8 subscribers per card equals 112 subscribers
per housing), collisions may already occur at the second housing (see page 31)!

Setting the server ID with DIP switches

 Initialise each housing with the desired ID (“1” to “14”):
 Set the DIP switches “1” to “4” of the G8-GEP to the switch position “ON“.
 Switch the Intercom Server off and back on.
 Set the desired number (doe for switch position, see below).
 Switch the Intercom Server off and back on.
 Connect all housings. If all server IDs are set correctly, the status LEDs of the G8-NET card must sig-
nal faultless operation (see page 36).

ATTENTION: Initialisation
Initialising the Intercom Server resets the configuration!

 Connect the computer with any housing and receive the configuration of the Intercom Server in
CCT 800 (for further information see manual “Intercom Server Configuration”). All cards are rec-
ognised automatically and the Intercom Server can be configured.

Function Description
In this field, enter the IP address of the router (gateway), via which the Intercom
Router IP address
Servers communicate.
In this field, enter a VLAN ID when the GE 800 is in a virtual network. Enter this ID
VLAN-ID
as decimal value (0 – 4095; “0” and “4095” are reserved).
Address Conflict By activating this checkbox, the IP station will stop its communication (according
Detection to RFC 5227) in case of an IP address conflict. 1)
1) With using a dynamic IP address, the respective IP station receives a new IP address from a DHCP server. With
using a static IP address, the IP address remains unchanged (as long as the IP address conflict is existing, the
IP station will not be indicated in IP Station Config). In this case, the static IP address has to be changed man-
ually in another network with no IP address conflict. For further information see manual “Intercom Server
Configuration”.

Firewall configuration
It is possible to define which cards communicate via which jacks of the G8-NET card. Additionally, it is
possible to configure which cards are allowed to use which jack (Uplink, Downlink or both).

Configuration CCT 800

 IP - Settings > tab NET - Firewall
 Activate the checkboxes Uplink VLAN-ID and Downlink VLAN-ID for each card, which is allowed
to communicate via the appropriate jack (see example 1):
 Checkbox activated: For the card in this slot, the communication to the network over the “Uplink”
or “Downlink” jack is possible.
 Checkbox deactivated: For the card in this slot, the communication to the network over the “Up-
link” or “Downlink” jack is not possible.7
 In the fields Uplink VLAN-ID and Downlink VLAN-ID, enter the VLAN IDs for the communication
with the network in case the external switches are configured with VLAN.
 Activate the checkboxes NET-ARP for Uplink and NET-ARP for Downlink to enable a NET
connection (see example 2):
 Checkbox activated: The NET card establishes a NET connection to the next Intercom Server.
 Checkbox deactivated: It is not possible to establish a NET connection to the network.

NOTE: NET connection

For situations where the NET-card shall communicate with the network, however no NET-connec-
tions shall be possible (e.g. LAN-connection).

 Activate the checkbox Allow packets between up- and downlink to enable communication via
the jacks “Uplink” or “Downlink” (see example 3):
 Checkbox activated: It is possible that two networks can establish a connection over the “Uplink”
and “Downlink” jack.
 Checkbox deactivated: It is not possible to establish a connection over the “Uplink” and “Down-
link” jack. It is just possible to establish a connection to the network.

Examples for firewall configuration

Example 1
The IP subscriber card shall only communicate with network “A”. The LAN card shall establish a con-
nection to both networks. To lock the communication between the IP subscriber card and network “B”,
the checkbox for the jack, which is connected with network “B”, has to be deactivated. In this example,
the checkbox “Downlink mask (Slot)” has to be deactivated for the G8-IP card.

5. Configuration CCT 800 GE 800

Configuration of bandwidth usage

It is possible to configure the maximum bandwidth used in the network by the Intercom Server.

Configuration CCT 800

 IP - Settings > tab Extended Settings
 In the drop-down list Bandwidth in kBit, select the bandwidth, which is used in the network by the
G8-NET card for data and speech.

NOTE: Bandwidth
The overall bandwidth has always to be set higher as the data bandwidth. It is recommended to
select “unlimited”.

 In the drop-down list Data-Bandwidth in kBit, select the bandwidth, which is used for data packets
that leave the G8-NET cards.

NOTE: Bandwidth
When the bandwidth is reduced, the packets leave the cards with a longer delay between them
(traffic shaping algorithm according to leaky bucket principle). This prevents a “packet burst”, which
can lead to a queue overflow at the router.

At bad Internet connection or missing QoS

 When transmitting speech via a data network, the Intercom Server performs a automatic jitter ad-
justment. At a bad Internet connection or missing QoS mechanisms, this can lead to a reduced
speech quality.
 If the speech transmission at the start of conversations is faulty, the time in the drop-down list Jitter
Buffer Start Delay should be increased.
 If speech quality is not good during conversations, the checkbox No decrement of Jitter Buffer
should be activated. This prevents automatic readjusting of the jitter adjustment.
