CVE3308: STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS I
FINAL EXAMINATION: JANUARY 2018 SESSION

Instructions: This paper consists of TWO (2) sections. Answer ALL (3) questions in
SECTION A. Answer any ONE (1) question in SECTION B.

Section A:

Question 1: Energy Method Using Virtual Work Method

Calculate the horizontal and vertical deflections at joint D using Virtual Work Method for the
truss structure as shown in Fig.Q1 below.

The truss is pin supported at joint A and roller supported at joint C.

A vertical load of 84 kN acts at joint B and a horizontal load of 35 kN acts at joint D. The
area A and elastic modulus E are the same for all the truss members and are given as shown
in Fig.Q1

a.) Calculate the vertical deflection at joint D. (13 marks)

b.) Calculate the horizontal deflection at D (12 marks)

Question 2: Stiffness Method in Structural Analysis.

Calculate the moment at the fixed end support for the 2 span continuous beam structure as
shown in Fig.Q2 below using stiffness method. (Hint: Use superposition of fixed end and
nodal load structure.)

The continuous beam is roller supported at joint A and B. It is fixed end supported at joint C.

A uniform load of 10kN/m is acting on member BC and a clockwise moment of 20 kN-m is

applied at joint B.

Elastic modulus E and moment of inertia I are the same for all members.

a.) Assemble the structure stiffness matrix [K] based on the DOF designation as
shown in Fig.Q2. (5 marks)

b.) Solve the stiffness matrix equation [Q f] = [Kff][Df] for the joint rotations D1 and
D2 at joints A & B in terms of EI for the nodal load structure. (10 marks)

c.) Solve the stiffness equation [Qs] = [Ksf][Df] for the fixed end moment at joint C
due to joint rotations D1 and D2 for the nodal load structure. (5 marks)

d.) Calculate the total moment at joint C, moment MBA and MBC of the structure as
shown in Fig.Q2. . (5 marks)

Question 3: Influence Line Analysis Using Muller Breslau Principle.

For the structure as shown in Fig.Q3 below, answer the following questions using Muller
Breslau principle. Calculate key ordinates of the influence diagrams drawn.

a.) Draw the influence line for moment at fixed end support A. (5 marks)

b.) Draw the influence line for shear at fixed end support A. (5 marks)

c.) Draw the influence line for reaction at support E. (5 marks)

d.) Draw the influence line for internal moment at point D. (5 marks)

e.) The live load is 10kN/m. Calculate the maximum moment that could be generated at
point D and at the fixed end support at A due to the uniform live load. (5 marks)

Section B:

Question 4: Slope Deflection Method with Sidesway in Structural Analysis.

Calculate the support reactions of the statically indeterminate frame as shown in Fig.Q4,
using slope deflection method. Use modified slope deflection equations where applicable.

EI is constant for all members. Support A and B are pinned.

(a) Solve for the member end moments using slope deflection method.
Use modified slope deflection equations where applicable.
Equation could be solved using calculator. (20 marks)

(b) Calculate the vertical and horizontal support reactions at supports A and B. (5 marks)

Question 5: Moment Distribution Method with Sidesway in Structural Analysis

Calculate the support reactions of the statically indeterminate frame as shown in Fig.Q5,
using moment distribution method. Use modified stiffness in calculating distribution factor
where applicable.

EI is constant for all members. Support A and B are pinned.

a.) Calculate the fixed end moments and moment distribution factor (DF).
Use modified stiffness where applicable. (4 marks)

b.) Calculate the member end moments using moment distribution method. (16 marks)

c.) Calculate the vertical and horizontal support reactions at supports A and B. (5 marks)
