CVE3308: STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS I
FINAL EXAMINATION: AUGUST 2019 SESSION

Instructions: This paper consists of TWO (2) sections. Answer ALL (3) questions in
SECTION A. Answer any ONE (1) question in SECTION B.

Section A:

Question 1: Energy Method Using Virtual Work Method

Calculate the horizontal deflections at joint D using Virtual Work Method for the truss
structure as shown in Figure Q1 below.

The truss is roller supported at joint A and pin supported at joint B.

Horizontal loads of 3 kN and 2 kN act at joint C and joint D respectively. The area A and
elastic modulus E are the same for all the truss members and are given as A = 400 mm2, E=
200 GPa.

a.) Calculate the reactions RA, RB and HB due to the real loads (5 marks)

b.) Calculate the member forces “N” due to the real loads (5 marks)

c.) Calculate the reactions rA, rB, and hB due to the unit virtual load (5 marks)

d.) Calculate the member forces “n” due to the unit virtual load (5 marks)

e.) Calculate the horizontal deflection ΔD at joint D using VWM (5 marks)

Question 2: Stiffness Method in Structural Analysis.

Calculate the support reactions at joints ①, ② and ③ for the 2 span continuous beam
structure as shown in Figure Q2 below using stiffness method. (Hint: Use superposition of
fixed end and nodal load structure.)

The continuous beam is fixed supported at joint ①. It is roller supported at joints ② and ③.

A loading of 10kN/m acts on the 2 span beam as shown in Figure Q2.

Elastic modulus E and moment of inertia I are the same for all members.

a.) Assemble the structure stiffness matrix [K] based on the DOF designation as
shown in Fig.Q2. (6 marks)

b.) Calculate the fixed end moments of member 1 and member 2 (3 marks)

c.) Solve the stiffness matrix equation [Q f] = [Kff][Df] for the joint rotations θ1 and θ2
at joints ② and ③ in terms of EI for the nodal load structure. (6 marks)

d.) Solve the stiffness equation [Qs] = [Ksf][Df] for the fixed end moment at joint ①
due to joint rotations θ1 and θ2 for the nodal load structure. (3 marks)

e.) Calculate the total beam end moments, and vertical support reactions at joints ①,
② and ③ as shown in Fig.Q2. . (7 marks)

Question 3: Influence Line Analysis Using Muller Breslau Principle.

For the structure as shown in Figure Q3 below, answer the following questions using Muller
Breslau principle. Calculate key ordinates of the influence diagrams drawn. The beam is
fixed supported at A and pinned supported at C. There is a hinge at B.

The beam is used to support a uniform distributed live load of 3 kN/m and a concentrated
live load of 20 kN.

a.) Draw the influence line for the fixed end moment at A. (5 marks)

b.) Draw the influence line for internal shear VD at D (5 marks)

c.) Draw the influence line for internal moment MD at D (5 marks)

d.) Determine the influence line for the reaction RC at C (5 marks)

e.) Calculate the maximum value of moment M D at D due to the live loads. (5 marks)

Section B:

Question 4: Structural Analysis by Slope Deflection Method.

Calculate the support reactions of the statically indeterminate frame as shown in Figure Q4,
using slope deflection method. Use modified slope deflection equations where applicable.

EI is constant for all members. Support at A is fixed and at C is pinned.

Vertical member AB has length of 4 m and has a horizontal point load of 50 kN acting at
mid-span. Horizontal member BC has a length of 5 m and a vertical uniform load of 30 kN/m
acting on it.

(a) Solve for the member end moments MAB, MBA, MBC, MCB using slope deflection method.
Use modified slope deflection equations where applicable. (Hint: Calculate the required
fixed end moments first and write the slope deflection equations)
(18 marks)

(b) Calculate the support reactions at supports A and C. (4 marks)

(c) Draw shear and moment diagrams of member BC only (3 marks)

using moment distribution method. Use modified stiffness in calculating distribution factor
where applicable.
