Flow Sensors
What Actually Are Flow
Sensors?
A flow measurement device
commonly referred to as a
flowmeter is an instrument that is
used to measure the flow rate of a
fluid per unit time (Volume or mass
of the given fluid.)
Why do we need Flow sensors?

• Flow measurement is crucial to monitor, control,

and keep a check on the rate of fluid that is
flowing through a channel or section.
• The flow measurement process measures the
flow of a wide range of liquids, including heavy
oils, light gases, spirits, chemicals, water or food.
• The basic purpose of a flow meter is to maintain
efficiency and accuracy within the plant and to
understand and influence profitability.
Flow measuring instruments/sensors can
be classified based on the following
criteria:

Classification of 1.Based on the fluid flow regime - Laminar

or turbulent flow
Flow Sensors 2.Based on the fluid flow direction - uni-
directional or bi-directional
3.Based on the type of flow - Liquid or gas
flow
Different Types of Flow
Sensors

Based on these criteria, the different types

of flow measuring instruments/sensors are:

1. Differential Pressure Flow Sensor

2. Positive Displacement Flow Sensor
3. Turbine Flow Sensor
4. Magnetic Flow Sensor
5. Ultrasonic Flow Sensor
6. Vortex Flow Sensor
Working Principle of
Different Sensors

Different Sensors have

different working
principle but here is a
simple working principle
of all sensors.
Applications

Flow measuring instruments/sensors find applications in various industries, such as oil

and gas, chemical processing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and water
treatment. Some of the common applications of flow measuring instruments/sensors
are:

1.Measuring the flow rate of liquids and gases in pipelines

2.Monitoring the flow of cooling water in industrial processes
3.Controlling the flow of chemicals in chemical processes
4.Measuring the flow of water in water treatment plants
5.Monitoring the flow of air in HVAC systems.
Level Measuring Instruments/Sensors

Level measuring
instruments/sensors are devices
used to determine and monitor They play a crucial role in
the level of substances such as industrial processes and control
liquids, solids, or granular for several reasons:
materials in tanks, vessels, or
other containers.
