In today’s digital marketplace, the design and functionality of an e-commerce website play a pivotal role
in determining its success.
Consumers expect a seamless, user-friendly experience, and failure to meet these expectations can lead to
lost sales and diminished customer satisfaction.
In this report, we evaluate the performance of five major e-commerce platforms—Amazon, eBay, Zappos,
Best Buy, and Etsy—against eight key criteria outlined in Table 4.11, which are essential for creating a
successful e-commerce site. These criteria include:
Website Evaluation

Functionality: Pages load quickly, with seamless navigation across categories.
Informational: Extensive product descriptions, reviews, and recommendations.
Ease of Use: Intuitive design, easy to browse and search.
Redundant Navigation: Multiple ways to navigate (search, categories,
recommendations).
Ease of Purchase: One-click purchase and fast checkout process.
Multi-browser Functionality: Works well across all browsers and devices.
Simple Graphics: Focus on functionality with minimal distractions.
Legible Text: Clean fonts and design with excellent readability.
2. eBay
Functionality: Pages perform well, though auctions can sometimes cause slower
navigation.
Informational: Detailed product listings, but can be inconsistent based on the seller.
Ease of Use: Slight learning curve due to the auction system and “Buy Now” options.
Redundant Navigation: Various paths for searching, bidding, and viewing
recommendations.
Ease of Purchase: Several payment methods, though some might find the auction
process lengthy.
Multi-browser Functionality: Excellent compatibility with browsers and devices.
Simple Graphics: Mostly functional design, though a bit outdated in comparison to other
sites.

Beyond the technical criteria, Zappos is renowned for putting the customer first, with a hassle-free returns
policy and 24/7 customer support. This sets it apart from most other e-commerce sites.
