- PRONUNCIATION OF THE REGULAR VERB INFLECTION– ED.

1. Ending of the verb: / p, k, tʃ, θ , h, f, s, ss, ʃ, x / - VOICELESS - /t/

/tʃ/ is found in the spelling <ch> chaval, chico.


/θ/ is found in the spelling <z> zapato, zorro.
/ ʃ/ is found in the spelling <sh> she, shoe

ask-ed /t/
laugh –ed /t/ gh is pronounced /f/
finish –ed /t/
fix-ed /t/

2. Ending of the verb: / b, g, l, m, n, r, and vowels (a, e, i, o, u and diphthongs) / -


VOICED - /d/

return – ed /d/
fill –ed /d/
play – ed /d/

3. Ending of the verb: /t, d/ - /id/

want – ed /id/
decide –d /id/ In this verb we do not pronounce –e.

Exceptions to the rule:

/f/ is voiceless. laugh /lʌf/ laughed /t/


/v/ is voiced arrive – d /d/

closed /d/ In this case the sound <s> is surrounded by two vowels (a voiced sound),
so the inflection –d is pronounced voiced /d/

/dʒ/ is a voiced sound and it is found in words such as manage, arrange, change. In this
case, the pronunciation is /d/.

arrange – d /d/
change –d /d/
