Determination of Bitumen Content by Centrifuge Extractor

(ASTM D-2172)

Scope
This is a quality control test which provides methods of extracting the bitumen from the mixed
material. The results obtained from the methods herein may be affected by the age of the material
tested. For best results it is recommended that these tests be carried out on mixtures and pavements
shortly after their preparation.

Apparatus
 Centrifuge extraction apparatus
 Filter paper to fit the rim of the bowel of extraction apparatus
 Oven
 Balance

Procedure
 Obtain the sample in accordance with the prescribed procedure (T 168)
 If the mixture is not sufficiently soft to separate with a spatula or trowel, place it in a
large flat pan and warm to 110 ± 5◦C until it can be handled or separated.
 Split or quarter the material until the mass of material required for test is obtained
 The size of the test sample shall be governed by the nominal maximum aggregate size of
the mixture and conform to the mass requirement.
 Alternatively weigh a representative sample of about 1000 grams.
 Place the test portion in to the bowl of the extraction apparatus, distributing it uniformly
around the periphery of the bowl.
 Cover the sample in the bowel with solvent (Benzene, carbon tetrachloride, carbon
disulphide) and allow sufficient time for the solvent to disintegrate the test portion (not
over one hour).
 Place the bowl containing the test portion and the solvent in the extraction apparatus.
 Dry the filter ring to a constant mass in an oven at 110±5◦C and fit it around the edge of
the bowl.
 Clamp the cover on the bowl tightly and place an appropriate container under the drain to
collect the extract.
 Start the centrifuge revolving, slowly and gradually increase the speed to a maximum of
3600 rpm until solvent ceases to flow from the drain.
 Allow the machine to stop and add 200 ml pf fresh solvent and repeat the procedure.
 Use sufficient solvent additions so that extract is not darker than a light straw colour.
Collect the extract and washing in an appropriate container for mineral matter
determination.
 Carefully remove all the contents of the bowl into a metal pan and dry in air under a hood
and then to constant mass in an oven at 110±5◦C.
 Remove the filter ring from the bowl and dry ring to constant mass in an oven at
110±5◦C.
 The mass of the extracted aggregates is equal to the mass of aggregates in the pan plus
increase in the mass of the filter ring.
