Coursework: Design of open channels

Answer the following questions
Q1: Design an irrigation canal to irrigate 100 km2 of farmland. The water demand is 0.1
m3/sec/km2 of land. The topography is flat and a bottom slope of 1 m per 2 km will be
appropriate. The soil through which the channel is to be excavated is stiff clay.
Q2: A channel has to be designed for drainage to carry flow from 200 km2. If the flow/km2
is 0.5 m3/s/km2, determine the channel size using (a) the permissible velocity method, (2)
the tractive force method. The material size is 2 mm and So = 0.00002
Q3: Design a canal to carry 30 m3/s. The canal will be excavated through rock and the
local topography allows a bottom slope of 0.0003.
Q4: Design a storm sewer for a new housing subdivision. The area of the subdivision is 4
km2. The storm runoff may be taken as 0.15 m3/s/km2. The topography is such that a
channel bottom slope of 1 m in 2 km will be economical.
Q5: Calculate the geometry of most economical trapezoidal brick-lined (n=0.016) channel
to carry a discharge of 200 m3/s with a slope of 0.0004.
Q6: It is required to line an open channel with a trapezoidal cross section to prevent
erosion. The longitudinal slope is 0.0009. The canal bottom width is 10ft and side slopes
are 2(H):1(V). If rubble will used for lining (𝜸𝒔 = 135 ib/ft3, n = 0.03), determine the D50
for the rubble to be used. The design flow is 1000 ft3/s, the shear stress that the rubble
can bear = 0.04(𝜸𝒔 − 𝜸𝒘𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 ) D50 Ib/ft2

Q7: a) Discuss factors of design of open channels

b) Discuss the permissible velocity method for designing erodible channels
c) Discuss the tractive force method for designing erodible channels
d) Discuss the distribution of shear stress in open channel canals
(e) Explain factors affecting manning coefficient
Q8: Define freeboard, maximum permissible velocity, tractive force, the best hydraulic
section, Conveyance factor, section factor

Q9: Calculate the discharge of the canal with the shown cross section. Manning coefficient
=0.001 and y = 2.44 m

Q10: In a rectangular channel (b= 1.83 m) water is flows at 4.5 m3/s, longitudinal slope =
0.002 and n = 0.012. Find the normal depth for uniform flow and calculate the critical
depth. Determine the state of flow according to Froude number.
Q11: A trapezoidal channel carries 500 ft3/s. The maximum allowable velocity is 3.0 ft/s.
Determine the depth of flow (y) and the width of the channel bed (b) if the hydraulic
radius is one-half the depth of flow (1.5y). The side slope of the trapezoidal sections is 3:2.
Also, Determine the slope of the channel bed, n= 0.025.

Q12: Calculate the flow rate in a trapezoidal channel with a bed width 6.0 m and water
depth 3.0 m. The side slopes of the trapezoidal section is 3(H):4(v). The channel
longitudinal slope is 0.00016. Take C=70. Also calculate Froude number and specify the
state of flow.

Q13: A flow of water of 100 l/s runs through a rectangular flume with a width of 600 mm
and adjustable bottom slope. If Chezy’s constant is 56, find the bottom slope required for
uniform flow at 300 mm water depth. Calculate the conveyance factor of the flume.
