STATEMENT:
To measure the density of iron bob having mass 2.1 gram using screw guage .
APPARATUS:
Screw guage
Iron bob with mass 2.1 grams
DIAGRAM:
PROCEDURE:
1. Examine the number of divisions on the circular scale and check the value of the
smallest division on the linear scale .To find the pitch of the screw, give the full
rotation to the screw head and find the distance on the linear scale through which
cap or screw hand moves in this one rotation. This distance is the pitch of the
screw. Pitch is denoted by h.
2. Pitch divided by the total number of divisions on the circular scale gives the least
count. That is
Least count (L. C) = Pitch of the screw \ No. of division on circular sale
3. Rotate the screw till the Jaws A and B meet and note down the zero -reading.
This gives zero - error. The zero-error will be positive and the correction will be
negative if the Zero of the circular scale stands below the zero of the linear sale.
If the zero of the circular scale stands above the zero of linear scale, the zero-
error will be negative and the zero correction will be positive. To find zero-error
note that division of the circular scale which faces the base line of the screw.
Subtract it from 100 (No of Divisions on circular scale), multiply the remainder
with least count. It means that the number of divisions multiplied by the least
Page 2
count gives the zero-error which can be positive or negative as already explained
above
4. Place the small sphere in the gap AB and turn the screw till the sphere is gently
pressed. Take the reading of the linear scale as well as the circular scale division
standing against the base line (zero line of linear scale). Calculate the fraction n ×
L.C. to be added in the linear scale reading, where n is the no. of divisions on
circular scale.
5. The observed diameter of the sphere is equal to the linear scale reading a 'R'
plus the product of the circular scale reading and the least count i.e. D = R+ n ×
LC where D is the Observed value of the diameter of the small sphere. Apply
zero corrected value (D ± C.).
6. Find the diameter of sphere in different positions (points) and apply zero-
correction in each reading to get the correct diameter and find the mean diameter
'D'.
7. Find the radius ‘R’ of the iron bob using R=d\2 and calculate the volume of the
4
sphere by using the relation ,volume of the sphere = 3 π𝑟 3
