OBSERVATION SHEET

Temperature of Experiment = 27 Degree Celsius

Grade of Bitumen = VG-10

S. No. W1(g) W2(g) W3(g) W4(g) Specific Gravity

1 70.62 183.94 136.83 184.82 1.013470
2 80.43 184.77 137.48 185.8 1.018386
AVERAGE 1.015928

RESULT:
The specific gravity of bitumen sample is 1.015928

INFERENCE:
From this experiment we get the specific gravity of bitumen sample is 1.015928. Which
means suitable values of specific gravity of bitumen sample for pavement construction is lies
between 1.013470 to 1.015928. We get difference between specific gravity is 0.004916.
According to the code repeatability and reproducibility are 0.002 and 0.005 respectively for
the pycnometer method. The difference between specific gravity 0.004916 (Experimental) is
closer to the given values in code, so the results can be termed both repeatable and
reproducible.

1. Ductility 79.6 cms 85.1 cms 82.35 cms

Result: Ductility of given sample of bitumen is 82.35 cms.

Inference:
1. Both test values lie within (79.6-82.35=-2.75) & (85.1-82.35=2.75) +- 5% (4.1175) of
mean value. So test results are correct to use.
2. For VG-10 bitumen, the minimum value for paving is 75cms and our value is 82.35 cms
which is greater than the minimum required. So bitumen is suitable for road construction.
3. Repeatability: 10% of the mean value = 0.1×82.35 = 8.235cms.
4. Reproducibility: 20% of the mean value = 0.2×82.35 = 16.47cms.
5. Test results difference is 85.1 -79.6 = 5.5cms < 8.235(%10 of mean)cms.
Hence we are within the limits and possessing the quality of Repeatability. For
reproducibility we are not concerned here because another test is done at the lab itself.

value

Mean penetration value = 87.84

Grade of bitumen =S 90

INFERENCE:

1.) IS 73:1992 code: Mean penetration value (87.84) is classify it as 80/100 penetration grade
and S-90. So, this sample is suitable for pavement construction of roads.
2.) IS code says that the difference between the penetration values of samples should not be
more than 4 for range 50 to 149. For this sample 89.67-86=3.67<4, so it is suitable for use.

3.) Reproducibility-Values should be within 8% of mean value

Sample 1 Sample 2
8% of 89.67=7.17 8% of 86=6.88
This sample values are not within range. But it is of less concern to us as both the samples
and tests were tested in the laboratory itself.

4.) Repeatability- Values should be within 3% of mean

Sample 1 Sample 2
3% of 89.67=2.69 3% of 86=2.58
Both samples values are not within the range hence not possessing the quality of
Repeatability.

Bitumen grade: VG-10

Approximate softening point (SP): For VG-10 grade of bitumen it is 40 oC

Mean Value of

SP

Result: In this case the Softening Point of Bitumen comes out to be 42.3 oC

Inference: The maximum deflection allowed in the sample for VG-10 grade bitumen from
the mean is 1oC. In this case difference of both samples from mean is = (0.3,-0.3), hence it
satisfies repeatability. In standard conditions the reproducibility of test sample should not
vary by more than 2oC. In our condition the variation is 0.6oC so it satisfies reproducibility.
So our sample is useable for all kinds of pavement construction.

Result: Aggregate crushing value in % = 17.76

Inference: As per IS 2386 P4 code the aggregate crushing value should not more than
