The following questions are case-based questions. Each question has an internal choice
and carries 4 (2+1+1) marks each. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions
that follow.

29. Transition elements are elements that have partially filled d-orbitals. The configuration of
these elements corresponds to (n – 1)d1-10 ns1-2. It is important to note that the elements
mercury, cadmium and zinc are not considered transition elements because of their
electronic configurations, which corresponds to (n – 1)d10ns2. Some general properties of

30. The rate of reaction is concerned with decrease in concentration of reactants or increase in
the concentration of products per unit time. It can be expressed as instantaneous rate at a
particular instant of time and average rate over a large interval of time. Mathematical
representation of rate of reaction is given by rate law. Rate constant and order of a reaction
can be determined from rate law or its integrated rate equation.

of benzene is depressed by 2.94 K. What is the percentage association of benzoic acid if it
forms a dimer in solution? (Kf for benzene = 4.9 K kg mol–1)
b) Calculate the amount of NaCl (M = 58.5 g mol–1) that must be added to 100 g of water
so that freezing point is depressed by 2 K. Kf for water is 1.86 K/m.

(a) The conductivity of 0·001 mol L acetic acid is 4.95 × 10–5 S cm–1. Calculate the
