condition requires that the flat be constructed from two lengths connected with the lap spice using six M20 bolts
(Ref Fig. 2). Determine the efficiency of the joint, if the joint is designed to develop maximum tension capacity.

3. Design a efficient double cover butt joint connecting two plates subjected to a tensile force (Ref. Fig. 3). Determine
the maximum load it can carry if the size of each plate is 250+X × 16 mm and of black bolts of grade 4.6 are used
for the connection. Sketch the connection.

1. Design a connection to join two plates of 300×(12+X/10) mm with fy=250 MPa to mobilise the full plate tensile
strength using site fillet welds of (i) a lap joint is used, (ii) a butt joint is used. The design should confirm to IS 800
and IS 816.
2. A ISMC250 (Ref. Fig 1) is connected to a 12+(X/10) mm gusset plate with a lap length of 200+X mm using 5+X/100
mm and 8+X/100 mm fillets for web and for flanges respectively. If the capacity of the channel is 400+X kN,
determine the efficient of the joint. If the efficiency is to be 100%, design the connection with the same lap and
weld sizes using slot welds.

using the built-up configuration shown below.
3. Design a column with two channel sections laced together and placed toe-to-toe and spaced apart to support a
design load of 2000+X kN. The effective length of column is 5.X m.
4. Design a column with two channel sections battened together and placed toe-to-toe and spaced apart to support a
design load of 1800+X kN. The effective length of column is 4.8.X m.

1. Design a shape for a typical floor beam AB. Assume that the floor slab provides continuous lateral support. The
service dead loads consist of a 125-inch-thick reinforced-concrete floor slab (normal weight concrete), a partition
load of 1.X kN/m2 0.5X kN/m2 to account for a suspended ceiling and mechanical equipment. The service live load
is 3.X kN/m2. Consider the floor beam AB as (i) Laterally restrained and (ii) Laterally unrestrained
2. A 20m long plate girder has to support a UDL and concentrated loads at one-third points. The uniform load
consists of 18.X kN/m and 30.X kN/m live load. Each concentrated load consists of a 125.X kN dead load and a
225.X kN live load. There is lateral support at the ends and at the points of concentrated load. Using E410 grade
steel (i) determine cross-section, (ii) design intermediate and end stiffeners.

1. A 200+X mm wide plate is to be jointed to another 300+X mm wide plate section. Determine the design strength of
the joint if the overlap of the plates is 150 mm. Both longitudinal and end fillet welds are provided. What will be
the overlap required if only longitudinal fillet welds are provided? The plates are 8 mm thick and connected with
minimum size of weld as per IS specification.
2. An equal angle 75 mmx75mm is subjected to a load of 180+X kN, whose line of action passes through the centroid
of the section, which is 22.2 mm from the heel. This angle is welded to a gusset plate. If the size of the weld is
8mm, find the length of the side fillet welds.
3. A bracket shown in Fig. 1 is welded to a stanchion by side fillet welds on three sides. Estimate the maximum force
per length of the weld if the bracket carries a load of 200+X kN.

4. A tie member of a roof truss consists of 2 ISA 90x60x10. The angles are connected on either side of 12 mm gusset
plate and the member is subjected to a factored tension of 350+X kN. Design the welded connection assuming
shop weld.
5. Find the lengths of the fillet welds shown in Fig. 2 used to connect angle 100 × 100 × 6 to a gusset of 12 mm thickness.

1. Design a compression member using two equal angles to carry a compression of 200kN. The center to center
distance between the end connections is 3 + (X/10) m. Assume that (a) the angles are placed on the same side of
the gusset and (b) the angles are placed on both sides of the gusset.
2. Find the ultimate design load of the compression member whose cross-section is shown in figure below. The
effective length of the member is 4 + (X/10) m
3. Design a laced built-up column of effective length 8+ (X/10) m to carry a load 10,000 kN using four angles. Use
angles as lacing bars and their connection with main angles may be done using bolts.

1. Design the continuous beam shown in figure below. Consider the beam as (i) laterally restrained and

and B, otherwise, the beam is laterally unsupported. Assume EI is same for the entire section.
3. Design a beam-column subjected to a factored axial load of 400+X kN and a factored bending moment of
60+X kNm at the fixed end. The other end of the beam-column is hinged. The unsupported length of the beam-
column is 4 m.
4. Design an I-section for the beam-column shown in figure below. Assume that no lateral support is provided along
the length of the beam except at supports.

2. Design an I section purlin for a roof truss having the following data: Span of truss=12 m; Spacing
of truss=[4+(0.5xX)] m c/c; Inclination of the roof=30°; Spacing of purlin=1.6m c/c; Wind
suction=1.4 kN/m2; Roof covering of AC sheets (assume a weight of 1.68 kN/m2). Take live load
as 0.75 kN/m2 on plan area less 0.02 kN/m2 for every degree increase in slope over 10° subject to a
minimum of 0.40 kN/m2.
3. Design a simply supported crane girder to carry an electric overhead travelling crane for the
following data: Crane capacity=300+10X kN; Weigh of the crane and crab=300 kN; Weight of the
crane=200 kN; Minimum hook approach=1.2m; Centre-to-centre distance between wheels=3.2m;
Span of gantry girder=5m; Centre-to-centre distance between gantries=15m; Weight of rail=
300 N/m; Height of rails=75mm; Yield stress of steel=250 MPa.
