SALT ANALYSIS

EXPERIMENT NO. 11

AIM:
To analyse one acidic radical (anion) and one basic radical (cation) in given inorganic salt.
MATERIAL REQUIRED:
BaCl2 solution, conc. HCl, lead acetate solution, ammonium acetate solution, H2S gas, NH4OH,NaOH,
[K4Fe(CN)6] , test tube holder, test tube, burner, filter paper and funnel.
OBSERVATION TABLE:
a. Table for acidic radical:
S.NO. EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE
1. To the pinch of salt, add diluted H2SO4. No gas evolved. CO32-, SO32-, S2-,
NO2- absent.
2. To the fresh pinch of salt, add conc. No gas evolved. Cl-, Br-, I-, NO3-
H2SO4. absent.
3. To the salt solution, add 1-2 mL of BaCl2 A white precipitate SO42- may be
solution. is formed. present.
4. To the above precipitate, add conc. HCl or The precipitate is SO42- confirmed.
conc. HNO3. insoluble.
5. To the salt solution, add lead acetate A white precipitate SO42- confirmed.
solution. is formed.
6. To the above precipitate, add ammonium The precipitate SO42- confirmed.

CHEMICAL EQUATIONS:
1. SO42- + BaCl2 BaSO4 + 2Cl-
(white ppt. insoluble in conc.HCl or conc. HNO3)
2. SO42- + Pb(CH3COO)2 PbSO4 + CH3COO-
(white ppt.)
3. PbSO4 + 2CH3COONH4 Pb(COOCH3)2 + (NH4)2SO4
