XII-MATHS TEST-PROBABILITY

Total Marks: 40 Time: 90min

Answer any 10 of the following questions 10x4=40
1. Bag I contains 3 red and 4 black balls and Bag II contains 4 red and 5 black
balls. One ball is transferred from Bag I to Bag II and then a ball is drawn
from Bag II. The ball so drawn is found to be red in colour. Find the
probability that the transferred ball is black.

2. In an examination, an examinee either guesses or copies or knows the

answer to a multiple choice question with four choices. The probability that
1 1
he makes a guess is and the probability that he copies the answer is .
3 6
1
The probability that his answer is correct, given that he copied it, is . The
8
1
probability that his answer is correct, given that he guessed it, is . Find the
4
probability that he knew the answer to the question, given that he correctly
answered it.

3. A card from a pack of 52 cards is lost. From the remaining cards of the pack,
two cards are drawn and are found to be both diamonds. Find the
probability of the lost card being a diamond.

4. A bag contains 4 balls. Two balls are drawn at random (without

replacement) and are found to be white. What is the probability that all the
balls in the bag are white?

5. A speaks truth 75% of the cases, while B speaks in 90% of the cases. In what
percent of cases are they likely to contradict each other in stating the same
fact?

6. There are three coins. One coin is having tails on both faces, another is a
biased coin that comes up tails 70% of the time and the third is an
unbiased coin. One of the coins is chosen at random and tossed. Find the
probability that it shows tail.

7. A letter is known to have come either from TATANAGAR or from CALCUTTA.
On the envelop, just two consecutive letter TA is visible. What is the
probability that the letter came from TATANAGAR.

8. A and B throw a pair of dice alternately. A wins the game, if he gets a total of
7 and B wins the game, if he gets a total of 10. If A starts the game, then find
the probability that B wins.

9. Assume that each born child is equally likely to be a boy or a girl. If a

family has two children, what is the conditional probability that both are
girls given that
(i) the youngest is a girl, (ii) at least one is a girl?

10.Two cards are drawn successively with replacement from a well-shuffled deck
of 52 cards. Find the probability distribution of the number of aces.

11.Assume that the chances of a patient having a heart attack is 40%. It is also
assumed that a meditation and yoga course reduce the risk of heart attack
by 30% and prescription of certain drug reduces its chances by 25%. At a time
a patient can choose any one of the two options with equal probabilities. It is
given that after going through one of the two options the patient selected at
random suffers a heart attack. Find the probability that the patient followed
a course of meditation and yoga?

12.A random variable X has the following probability distribution:

X 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
2 2
P(X) 0 k 2k 2k 3k k 2 2k 7k +k

Determine
(i) k (ii) P(X < 3)
(iii) P(X > 6) (iv) P(0 < X < 3)
