Open SolidWorks

Go to: Start > Programs > SolidWorks

Open the file: Blueprint-Setup.prt

NOTE: You can also use the YachtTutorial model: Hull_Starting_File_eBook_1.sldprt

Go to: File > Save As

Give your file the following name: Hull

Select the sketches BLUEPRINT_FRONTVIEW / BLUEPRINT_BACKVIEW and BLUEPRINT_TOPVIEW
and hide them by clicking on the glasses

We start with the blue contour line as shown in the picture below.

Create a new sketch on the Bottom Plane

Select the Bottom Plane in the Feature Manager

Click on the 2D Sketch icon to make a new sketch

Click on the Normal To option to rotate and zoom the model normal to the selected Plane.

Draw a horizontal line as shown in the picture

Connect the endpoint of the line with the Back Plane

Add the two dimensions and the horizontal relation as shown in the picture

NOTE: The Top Views of the yacht are 90 degrees rotated in order to have more space at the page.
If you want to rotate your views as well you can use the arrow keys on your keyboard for this.

Draw a three-point spline with one mid-point as shown in the picture and connect the endpoint of the spline with the origin

Select the Horizontal Line and the Spline, hold down the Control button and select the “Equal Curvature” option

Click OK

Zoom in on the left endpoint of the spline

Select the Arrow as shown in the detail

Add a vertical relation to the arrow as shown in the picture

Pull at the two arrows and the midpoint of the spline to create the exact curve of the blueprint as shown in the picture.

This spline is the most important contour line of the hull so it must perfectly match the blueprint.

Create a new sketch on the Mid Plane

Select the Mid Plane in the Feature Manager

Click on the 2D Sketch icon to make a new sketch

Create the second part of the edge with a spline with two midpoints

Create the third part of the edge with a straight line

Draw the line as shown in the picture

Make sure that the right endpoint of the straight line is connected to the Back Plane and the left side is connected with the previous Spline

Change the dimension of the line

Connect the endpoints of the spline with a tangency relation

Select a straight line, hold down the control key, select the spline and click on the Tangency icon
in the Add Relations bar.

Click OK

Add another Tangency relation to the other side of the Spline

Close the sketch

Transform the two 2d sketches into one 3d sketch

Create a Projected Curve

Go to: Insert > Curve > Projected

Select the two sketches to project : Sketch1 and Sketch2 in the Feature Tree

Select Curve1 and Curve2 as shown in the picture

Make sure that the green balls are both on the same end as shown in the picture

If not, click and drag one ball to the other side of the sketch

Create a Surface Loft

Select Tangency To Face as Start constraint for the transition between Surface-Loft1 and the new Surface Loft

Change the Tangent Length into 1.3

Select Normal to Profile as End constraint for the transition between the Mid Plane and the new Surface Loft

Create a Surface Extrude

Go to: Insert > Surface > Extrude or click on the Surface Extrude icon

Change into 5000 mm

Make sure that the extrusion is directed as shown in the picture.

If the direction is wrong, change it with the Reverse Direction button

Click OK

Trim the rear of Surface-Loft1 and Surface-Loft2

Go to: Insert > Surface > Trim or click on the Trim icon

Click in the Trim tool box

Select Surface-Extrude1 as shown in the picture.

Select the “Remove selections” option.

Select the two purple surfaces as shown in the picture.

Surface Split Options: Linear

Click OK

Knit the surfaces of the Hull

Go to Insert > Surface > Knit or click on the Surface Knit icon

Click in the Selections box and select the 3 blue surfaces

Select the ‘’Gap Control’’ option

Click OK

NOTE: It’s absolutely crucial that the color of the knitted edges changes from blue into black after the Knit feature
is applied. If the edge of the Knitted surface stay’s blue it means there’s a (small) gab between some surface
transitions. Make sure that the color of the Knitted edges always changes from blue into black when you’ve applied
the Knit feature. Otherwise it will causing problems later on if you want to convert the surface body into a Solid body.

Trim Surface-Extrude1

Go to: Insert > Surface > Trim or click on the Trim icon

Click in the Trim tool box

Select the blue body as Trim tool

Select the “Remove selections” option.

Select the three purple surfaces as shown in the picture.

Surface Split Options: Linear

Click OK

Create a Surface Fill

Go to: Insert > Surface > Fill or click on the Surface Fill icon

Select the three blue edges as shown in the picture

Click OK

Knit all the surfaces of the Hull

Go to Insert > Surface > Knit or click on the Surface Knit icon

Click in the Selections box and select the 3 blue surfaces

Select the ‘’Gap Control’’ option

Click OK

Create another Surface Fill

Go to: Insert > Surface > Fill or click on the Surface Fill icon

Select all the blue edges as shown in the picture

Select the Fix up boundary option

Select the Merge result option

Select the Try to form solid option (this option will solidify your model)

Click OK

You can use a Section View (top menubar) to check if your model is solid.

If this is not the case I recommend you to check if there are no blue edges left. They are supposed to be black.

Create a Shell

Select the two blue surfaces as shown in the picture

Go to Insert > Features > Shell or click on the Shell icon

Change into 120 mm

Click OK

Click OK for the Thickness warning

Hide the blueprint

Click on the BLUEPRINT_SIDEVIEW in the Feature Tree and click on the Glasses to hide the blueprint

Offset the outer edge of the hull

Go to Tools > Sketch Tools > Offset Entities or click on the Offset Entities icon

Change the Offset Distance into 50 mm

Select the five outer edges of the hull (yellow)

Make sure that the offset is directed inwards as shown in the Detail. If not, click on the Reverse
button to change the direction of the Offset.

Click OK

Trim the ends of the lines

Go to: Tools > Sketch Tools > Trim or click on the Trim icon

Select the Power Trim option

Zoom in at the left side of the view as shown in the picture

Click and drag the cursor over the lines to remove them

Select the blue straight line and click on the Fix button to constrain it

The color of the line changed from blue into black which means that the line is fully defined

Create an Extrude up to the shell of the Hull

Go to: Insert > Boss/Base > Extrude or click on the Extrude icon

Change the Blind direction into Up to Next

Click OK

Select the Power Trim option
