Important Questions of Wave Optics-3

1. In a Young's double slit experiment using light of wavelength 600 nm, the slit separation is 0.8 mm
and the screen is kept 1.6 m from the plane of the slits.
Calculate
(i) the fringe width
(ii) the distance of (a) third minimum and (b) fifth maximum, from the central maximum.
2. Two coherent light waves of intensity 5 x 10-2 Wm-2 each superimpose and produce the
interference pattern on a screen. At a point where the path difference between the waves is λ/6, λ
being wavelength of the wave, find the
(a) phase difference between the waves
(b) resultant intensity at the point
3. A slit of width 0.6 mm is illuminated by a beam of light consisting of two wavelengths 600 nm and
480 nm. The diffraction pattern is observed on a screen 1.0 m from the slit. Find:
a) The distance of the second bright fringe from the central maximum pertaining to
light of 600 nm.
b) The least distance from the central maximum at which bright fringes due to both the
wavelengths coincide
4. How will the interference pattern in Young's double-slit experiment be affected if
a) The screen is moved away from the plane of the slits.
b) The source slit is moved away from the plane of the slits.
c) The phase difference between the light waves emanating from the two slits S1 and
S2 changes from 0 to π and remains constant
5. In a diffraction pattern due to a single slit, how will the angular width of central maximum
a) Orange light is used in place of green light
b) Screen is moved closer to the slit
c) The slit width is decreased. Justify your answer in each case.
6. In an interference experiment third bright fringe is obtained at the screen with a light of 700 nm .
What should be the wavelength of light source to obtain fifth bright fringe at the same point.
7. A white light is used to illuminate the two slits in a Young's double slit
experiment. It results in the overlapping interference patterns on the screen
as each wavelength corresponds to one interference pattern.
At a point P, that is directly opposite to the slit S1, find the series of
wavelengths that will result in minima.
8. In a Young's double slit experimental setup, the intensity of the light waves from two coherent
sources are in the ratio of 9: 1. Find the ratio of intensity of bright and dark fringes in the
interference pattern.
9. Two coherent sources, whose intensity ratio is 16:1 produce interference fringes. Calculate the
ratio of intensity of maxima and minima in the fringe system
10. In Young’s interference experiment, the ratio of intensity at the maxima and minima in the
interference pattern is 25: 9. What will be the ratio of widths of the two slits
