Assignment Problems

Q.1. Show that 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 𝑧 2 − 𝑐 2 𝑡 2 = 0 is invariant under Lorentz transformation.

Q.2. Coordinates of an event are (4mm, 5mm, 1mm, 12 pico sec). In another frame the coordinates are (x, 5mm, 1mm,

8 pico sec). Calculate x, using relativity.

Q.3 Show that the relativistic form of Newton`s second law, when 𝐹⃗ is parallel to 𝑣⃗ is

𝑑𝑣 𝑣 2 −3/2
𝐹⃗ = 𝑚𝑜 𝑑𝑡 (1 − 𝑐2
)

Q.4. An event happens according to an observer O at (1m, -2 m, -3 m, 2 X 10 -8 m/s). The same event occurs at (1 m,

4.67 m, -3m, 2.44 X 10 -8 m/s) w.r.t observer O`. Find the velocity of 𝑂` w.r.t to O.

Q.5. A spaceship moving away from the earth with velocity 0.6 c fires a rocket where velocity relative to the spaceship

is 0.7 c. What will be the velocity of the rocket, as observed from the earth in two cases

(a) Away from the earth (b) towards the earth.

Q.6. A cube has density 𝜌𝑜 w. r. t stationary observer. If the cube moves with velocity v w.r.t observer along one edge,

𝑘𝑔

Q.7. Let a proton move with a speed equal to 1% of the speed of light. By what percent, does its mass exceed its

proper mass? [ Use binomial expansion]

Q. 8. Velocity of light in frame A has components (0.35 c, 0. 6 c, a). In frame B, the components are (0.25 c, b, u).

on earth. What is the speed of rocket?

Q. 11. Compute mass and speed of an electron having kinetic energy 1.5 MeV. Given rest mass of an electron 𝑚𝑜 =
