a common platform for applications. It acts as an intermediary between the computer hardware and the user, allowing
users to interact with the computer and its applications.

Types of Operating Systems:

Batch Operating Systems:

These early operating systems processed jobs in batches, where users submitted their jobs (programs) on punched cards
or magnetic tapes. The operating system would execute the jobs one by one, without any interaction with the user.
Examples of batch operating systems include IBM OS/360 and UNIVAC EXEC 8.

Multiprogramming Operating Systems:

With the advent of multiprogramming, multiple jobs could be executed simultaneously, making better use of the
computer's resources. The operating system would allocate CPU time to different jobs, allowing them to share the
processor. Examples of multiprogramming operating systems include UNIX and Windows NT.

Time-Sharing Operating Systems:

Time-sharing operating systems take multiprogramming a step further by allowing multiple users to interact with the
computer simultaneously. Each user is given a virtual machine, which is a simulated environment that appears to be a
dedicated computer. The operating system switches between users so quickly that each user perceives they have their
own computer. Examples of time-sharing operating systems include Linux and macOS.

Real-Time Operating Systems:

Real-time operating systems (RTOS) are designed to respond to events and stimuli within a very strict time constraint.
They are used in applications where the consequences of a missed deadline are severe, such as air traffic control and
medical devices. Examples of RTOS include VxWorks and QNX.

Distributed Operating Systems:

Distributed operating systems are designed to manage a network of computers as if they were a single system. They
distribute tasks and data across multiple computers to improve performance and scalability. Examples of distributed
operating systems include Apache Hadoop and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Mobile Operating Systems:

Mobile operating systems are designed for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. They provide a user
interface and platform for running mobile applications. Examples of mobile operating systems include Android and iOS.

Embedded Operating Systems:

Embedded operating systems are designed for specific devices or appliances, such as smart TVs, thermostats, and
printers. They are typically optimized for resource-constrained environments and may have specialized features for the
device's intended use. Examples of embedded operating systems include FreeRTOS and TinyOS.

These are just a few of the many types of operating systems that are available today. The choice of operating system
depends on the specific needs of the user or application.

Deadlock is a situation where two or more processes are blocked because each is waiting for a resource held by the
other. This can happen when processes are competing for shared resources, such as files, printers, or memory.

Deadlock avoidance is a technique used in computer science to prevent deadlock, Deadlock avoidance aims to design
systems and algorithms in a way that ensures deadlocks cannot occur by carefully managing resource allocation.

Deadlock avoidance works by ensuring that the four necessary conditions for deadlock never occur:

• Mutual exclusion: Only one process can hold a resource at a time.


• Hold and wait: A process holding at least one resource is waiting for at least one other resource.
• No preemption: Resources cannot be forcibly taken away from a process.
• Circular wait: There is a chain of two or more processes, each of which is waiting for a resource held by the next
process in the chain.

Banker’s Algorithm

Bankers’s Algorithm is a resource allocation and deadlock avoidance algorithm which test all the request made by
processes for resources, it checks for the safe state, and after granting a request system remains in the safe state it allows
the request, and if there is no safe state it doesn’t allow the request made by the process.

Inputs to Banker’s Algorithm

• Max needs of resources by each process.


• Currently, allocated resources by each process.
• Max free available resources in the system.

The request will only be granted under the below condition

• If the request made by the process is less than equal to the max needed for that process.
• If the request made by the process is less than equal to the freely available resource in the system.

Timeouts: To avoid deadlocks caused by indefinite waiting, a timeout mechanism can be used to limit the amount of time
a process can wait for a resource. If the help is unavailable within the timeout period, the process can be forced to
release its current resources and try again later.

An application input/output (I/O) interface is a software programming interface that allows applications to interact with
input and output devices. It provides a standard way for applications to communicate with devices such as keyboards,
mice, monitors, printers, and scanners.

Application I/O interfaces are typically implemented as libraries that applications can link to. These libraries provide
functions that allow applications to read and write data to devices, and to control their behavior.

Character-stream or Block:

A character stream or block both transfers data in form of bytes. The difference between both of them is that
character-stream transfers bytes in linear way i.e., one after another whereas block transfers whole byte in single unit.

Sequential or Random Access:

To transfer data in fixed order determined by device, we use sequential device whereas user to instruct device to
seek to any of data storage locations, random-access device is used.

Synchronous or Asynchronous:

Data transfers with predictable response times is performed by synchronous device, in coordination with others
aspects of system. An irregular or unpredictable response times not coordinated with other computer events is exhibits
by an asynchronous device.
Sharable or Dedicated:

Several processes or threads can be used concurrently by sharable device; whereas dedicated device cannot.

Speed of Operation:

The speed of device has range set which is of few bytes per second to few giga-bytes per second.

Read-write, read only, write-only:

Different devices perform different operations, some supports both input and output, but others supports only
one data transfer direction either input or output.

There are many applications of I/O interfaces. Some of the most common include:

• Input devices: I/O interfaces are used to connect input devices, such as keyboards, mice, and scanners, to
computers.
• Output devices: I/O interfaces are also used to connect output devices, such as monitors, printers, and speakers,
to computers.
• Storage devices: I/O interfaces are used to connect storage devices, such as hard drives, solid-state drives, and
optical drives, to computers.
• Network devices: I/O interfaces are used to connect network devices, such as routers, switches, and hubs, to
computers.
• Embedded systems: I/O interfaces are used to connect sensors, actuators, and other devices to embedded
systems.

• Least recently used (LRU): The page that has been least recently used is evicted first.
• Optimal algorithm: This algorithm always evicts the page that is least likely to be used in the near future.

Advantages:

Virtual memory management has several benefits:

• It allows programs to be larger than the amount of physical memory on the system.
• It provides memory protection, by preventing one program from accessing the memory of another program.
• It allows multiple programs to run simultaneously, by sharing the available physical memory.

Disadvantages:

• It can slow down the computer, because the OS has to spend time retrieving pages from secondary storage when
page faults occur.
• It can lead to fragmentation of secondary storage, as pages are scattered around the disk.
• The user will have the lesser hard disk space for its use.

ensuring that the following four conditions are not met simultaneously:

Mutual exclusion: Resources are not shared, and only one process can hold a resource at a time.

Hold and wait: Processes hold resources while waiting for additional resources.

No preemption: Resources cannot be forcibly taken away from a process.

Circular wait: Processes are waiting for resources held by other processes in a circular fashion.

If any of these conditions are violated, a deadlock can occur. Deadlock prevention techniques include:

One resource at a time: Only allow a process to hold one resource at a time.

Request all resources at once: Require a process to request all resources it needs before it starts executing.

Preemptable resources: Allow resources to be forcibly taken away from a process if it is deadlocked.

Deadlock detection and recovery: This approach allows deadlocks to occur but detects them and takes steps to recover
from them. This can be done by periodically checking for deadlocks and then aborting or restarting one or more of the
deadlocked processes.

Deadlock detection algorithms typically involve maintaining a dependency graph that shows which processes are waiting
for which resources. The algorithm can then check for cycles in the dependency graph, which indicate deadlocks.

Deadlock recovery techniques include:

Aborting processes: Abort one or more of the deadlocked processes and release the resources they hold.

Preempting resources: Preempt resources from one or more of the deadlocked processes and give them to other
processes.

Resource rolling back: Roll back the state of one or more of the deadlocked processes to a point before they entered the
deadlock state.

Deadlock avoidance: This approach tries to avoid deadlocks by making informed decisions about resource allocation. This
can be done by predicting future resource requests and granting resources based on these predictions.

Deadlock avoidance algorithms typically involve maintaining a resource allocation table that shows which processes hold
which resources. The algorithm can then check for potential deadlocks before granting resources to a process.
Deadlock avoidance techniques include:

Safe state: Check if the system is in a safe state before granting resources, where there is a sequence of resource
allocations that will allow all processes to complete.

Banker's algorithm: A formal algorithm for determining safe states and avoiding deadlocks.

Resource ordering: Assign a priority order to resources and grant resources to processes in a way that respects this order.

The choice of deadlock handling method depends on the specific situation and the requirements of the system. In
general, deadlock prevention is the most desirable approach, as it prevents deadlocks from occurring in the first place.
However, deadlock detection and recovery can be an effective approach for systems where deadlocks are rare but
unacceptable. Deadlock avoidance can also be an effective approach, but it can be more complex to implement than
deadlock prevention or deadlock detection and recovery.

Synchronization is the coordination of multiple processes or threads to ensure that they access and modify shared data
in a consistent and orderly manner. It is a fundamental concept in concurrent computing, as it prevents race conditions,

Synchronization is achieved using various synchronization primitives, such as:

Semaphores: Semaphores are variables that can be used to control access to shared resources. They provide a way to

Monitors: Monitors are high-level synchronization constructs that encapsulate both data and procedures. They provide a
way to group related data and procedures together and synchronize access to them.

Message passing: Message passing is a mechanism for communication and synchronization between processes or
threads that are running on different processors or computers. It involves sending and receiving messages that contain
data and instructions.

Classical synchronization problems are well-known problems that illustrate the challenges of synchronization in
concurrent computing. Some of the most common classical synchronization problems include:

The Producer-Consumer Problem:

This problem involves two processes, a producer and a consumer, that share a buffer. The producer produces items and
places them in the buffer, and the consumer removes items from the buffer. The processes must be synchronized to
ensure that the buffer does not overflow or underflow.
The Readers-Writers Problem:

This problem involves multiple readers and writers that share a data structure. The readers can read the data structure
concurrently, but the writers must have exclusive access to it to modify it. The processes must be synchronized to
prevent conflicts between readers and writers.

The Dining Philosophers Problem:

This problem involves five philosophers sitting around a circular table, each with a fork in one hand. To eat, a philosopher
needs forks from both sides of them. The philosophers must be synchronized to avoid deadlock, where all philosophers
are waiting for the fork on their left while holding the fork on their right.

LRU (Least Recently Used): This algorithm replaces the page that has not been used for the longest time. It assumes that
pages that have not been used recently are less likely to be used in the near future. Implementing an efficient LRU
algorithm can be complex due to the need to track page usage history.

LFU (Least Frequently Used): LFU replaces the page with the smallest number of references or the least frequently used
page. It assumes that pages with fewer references are less likely to be used soon. It might suffer in scenarios where a
page was heavily used in the past and is needed again.

Optimal Algorithm: This theoretical algorithm replaces the page that will not be used for the longest period in the future.
While it provides the best theoretical performance, it's impractical as it requires future knowledge of page accesses.

Clock (or Second-Chance): This algorithm maintains a circular list and checks whether a page has been referenced (a
"second chance"). If not, it's a candidate for replacement.

Random Replacement: A simplistic approach where a page is randomly selected for replacement. While easy to
implement, it might not be the most efficient in terms of performance.
