User interfaces

Page 12 - 14
A computer need an interface to interact with a computer system.
There are 4 differents ways to interact with a computer:
Command line Interface (CLI)
Graphical User Interface(GUI)
Dialogue-based Interface
Gesture based Interface

a. Command Line Interface (CLI)

Users has to type commands to instruct the
Computer.
This type of interface can be faster than other
interfaces.
Advantages
CLIs require very little processing . So run very quickly
Disadvantages
Commands need to be learnt /// looks intimidating for new users // the usermust be careful not to make
any typing errors.
b. Graphical User Interface
A graphical user Interface is probably
The most common type of interface used today.
GUIs use the following methods to allow users to
open and interact with programs:
Windows
Icons
Menus
Pointers
A GUI is called a “WIMP” interface.

Advantages Disadvantages

• It is intuitive • GUIs use up lot of the computer’s internal

• users don’t have to learn complicated memoruy to run
commands. • They are large
• It is eas to use • They need to use the CPU a lot more than CLIs
c) Dialogue-based Interface
A dialogue-based interface allows a user to interact with the computer through spoken word.
Common in modern cars.

Advantages Disadvantage
• It allows hands-free control. • Users have to learn which commands can be used
• It is useful for disabled users • Users have to train the interface with their voice
d) Gesture based Interface
Uses sensors ro detect and understand human gestures and movements, usually of the face and hands,
without actually touching a physical device.

Advantages Disadvantages
• The user does not have to use a mouse or other • Users have to learn the gesture for particular
pointing device requests.
• A system is required to recognise face movements
and gestures.
HW.
A.
1. State why a computer needs a user interface.
2. Other than a mouse , give one other device that can operate a GUI.
3. give four of the ways in which a user interacts with a GUI
4. Compare a GUI to a command line Interface (CLI) and explain which is easier for a new user.

B. The most commonly used CLI is MSDOS. Carry out research to find 10 DOS commands. Create a
table giving the commands in the first column and explanation of the commands in the second column
as shown below
