About This Documentation
Purpose This documentation describes, in detail, how to use the PSS Configurator to
configure a PSS 5000 Forecourt Controller that is used in a system where a
tank does not have a tank gauge probe associated with it.
This type of configuration is typically used for oil-mix dispensers where the
oil is stored in a tank or container that has no tank gauge probe installed.
By using the configuration method described, applications that use the Doms
Host Protocol will know that a tank without a tank gauge installed is deliberate
and that wet stock data is therefore not available.
Audience The content of this documentation is designed for service technicians or sys-
tem integrators who need to configure a site that has tanks without tank gauge
probes installed.
Prerequisites
Before you start Before this solution can be implemented the following conditions must be ful-
filled:
• PSS Application must support the Virtual Tank Gauge Protocol SW Block
• PSS Configurator version 1.10 or later must be used

PSS 5000 – Quick Guide
How to use PSS Configurator to configure a system with a tank without a gauge probe
Configuring a System Containing a Tank with no Gauge
Introduction Dispensers that provide blended grades are configured with links to multiple
tanks (i.e. those containing the products used to produce the blend). Dispens-
ers with normal blended grades, typically use tanks that have tank gauges in-
stalled. However, dispensers that provide an oil-mix blend often receive the oil
from a container where no gauge is installed.
This type of scenario can cause problems for applications that use the Doms
Host Protocol. By configuring the system as described in this document, the
applications are able to recognize that a tank without a gauge is a deliberate
installation and then ignore the missing data.
Although a site may have multiple oil containers, for configuration purposes
these are considered as a single tank, which is assigned a virtual tank gauge.
This means that only one virtual tank gauge is supported in the configuration.
Example of a system The illustration below shows a site that has an oil tank (TankID 41) that does
not have a tank gauge installed.
The contents of TankID 41 is used on 2 fuelling points (FpId 3 & FpId 4) when
the oil mix grade is dispensed.
By assigning a virtual tank gauge to a TankID, which is a common tank for all
fuelling points, applications that use the Doms Host Protocol are able to rec-
ognize that the data missing from this tank is acceptable.

How to use PSS Configurator to configure a system with a tank without a gauge probe
Process to configure a This process describes what is necessary to implement the virtual tank gauge
virtual tank gauge functionality:
Stage Description
1 Verify/Update PSS Configurator plugins
2 Make a copy of PSS configuration
Note: This is optional but recommended because during the process it is
necessary to Master Reset the forecourt controller..
3 Set up the PSS 5000 to support a virtual tank gauge
4 Configure the PSS 5000 with the virtual tank gauge
5 Verify configuration is uploaded to PSS 5000
Verify/Update PSS This procedure describes how to verify that the necessary plugin is installed in
Configurator plugins the PSS Configurator, and how to install it if it is not installed.
1. Open the PSS Configurator application.
2. Select Help → About Doms PSS Configurator.
The About Doms PSS Configurator window opens.
3. Use the scroll bar to scroll down through the Installed Plugins list.
4. Locate the Plugin file name: wetstock.jar.
This must show version 1.04 or later.
5. Do one of the following:
• If the plugin version is 1.04, click OK. The PSS Configurator is ready
for use and you can exit this procedure.
• If an older version of the plugin is installed, continue to the next step.
6. Select File → Get from PSS.
The Get window appears.
7. Type in the IP address of your PSS 5000 and the necessary user name and
password to log in.
Note: If you do not know this information contact your System Adminis-
trator.
8. Click Get.
The Update plugins window appears.
9. Verify that the New version is 1.04 and click Update.
The plugin is updated automatically and the current PSS configuration ap-
pears.
Note: The updated plugin is not activated until the PSS Configurator is re-
started.
10. Select File → Exit.
The PSS Configurator application closes.

Make a copy of PSS This procedure describes how to use the PSS Configurator to extract the con-
configuration figuration currently installed in the PSS 5000 and save it for later use.
Note: Make sure that all operations are stopped, transactions are cleared and
that any other relevant data has been saved by either local or remote ap-
plications.
1. Open the PSS Configurator application.
2. Select File → Get from PSS.
The Get window appears.
3. Type in the IP address of your PSS 5000 and the necessary user name and
password to log in.
Note: If you do not know this information contact your System Adminis-
trator.
The current PSS configuration is displayed.
4. Select File → Save to File.
The Save window appears.
5. Select a suitable location to save the configuration file and give it a suit-
able, identifiable name.
6. Click Save.
Set up the PSS 5000 to This procedure describes how to verify that the PSS 5000 supports the virtual
support a virtual tank tank gauge functionality and how to make the necessary protocol to port as-
gauge signments.
1. Open the PSS 5000 Service Menu and select 1.3 SW Blocks.
2. Verify that the Virtual Tank Gauge Protocol SW Block is listed.
If the required SW Block is not present, then you must upload and install
the correct PSS Application before you can continue. The procedure to do
this is outside the scope of this documentation.
3. Select 2.1 Protocol to Port Assignment.
The Protocol to Port Assignment page appears.
4. Go to port 99 and click Add.
The Add a Protocol table appears.
5. Open the Protocol Type drop-down list and select Tank Gauge.
6. Open the Protocol drop-down list and select Virtual Tank Gauge.
7. Click OK.
The page returns to the Protocol to Port Assignment list.
8. Click Save Changes to activate the changes.
The PSS 5000 performs a Master Reset.
9. After the Master Reset is completed, select 2.1 Protocol to Port Assignment
and verify that the Virtual Tank Gauge protocol is assigned to port 99.

with the virtual tank PSS 5000 so that the virtual tank gauge is active.
gauge
Note: Before starting this procedure, make sure that all forecourt devices are
closed.
1. Open the PSS Configurator application.
Note: It is assumed that the PSS Configurator has the correct plugins in-
stalled.
2. Select File → Open from File.
The Open window appears.
3. Locate and select the configuration file you saved before you updated the
PSS Application software and click Open.
The configuration appears in the PSS Configurator window.
4. Do one of the following:
• If a tank gauge for the container already exists, select the relevant tank
gauge and go to step 6 to reconfigure it.
• If no tank gauge for the container exists, go to the next step.
5. Select Items → Add tank gauge.
A new Tank Gauge tab appears. This will become the virtual tank gauge.

How to use PSS Configurator to configure a system with a tank without a gauge probe
Verify configuration is This procedure describes how to verify that the configuration in the PSS 5000
uploaded to PSS 5000 is correct and contains a valid virtual tank gauge.
1. Open a browser and in the URL field type in the following syntax:
http://<PSS IP addresss>/site_sta.xml
If you are not already logged in to the PSS 5000, provide your log in details
in the Windows Security window that appears.
2. In the xml file that appears, locate the <tank_gauge> element, which is lo-
cated under the following parent elements: <devices> <forecourt>
3. Expand the <tank_gauge> element and locate the tank gauge ID (e.g. 01) to
which you assigned the virtual tank gauge parameter values.
A successful configuration will display the following:
<device id="01" protocol="Virtual Tank Gauge" offline_count="0" online="yes"
type_bits="000000000000"> </device>.
If you do not see the parameter values shown above, go to Troubleshooting
virtual tank gauge settings.
Troubleshooting virtual If when you used the site_sta.xml file you did not see the correct result, then
tank gauge settings use the table below to help solve the problem.
Observation Action
