Lab 006 - Applications and Control panel

When complete, ask instructor to sign________________ then take a photo and

1) Windows Updates:
1. Click on the Start menu from the bottom-left corner.
2. Go to settings (gear icon).
3. Select the Update and Security icon.
4. Choose the Windows Update tab in the sidebar (Circular arrows) on the left-hand
side. We will not do the update in the lab; it will take forever, and that means you
can’t complete the lab 😊
5. In real life, you must do the update.
6. In this lab, we will click on Pause Update multiple times, until it becomes gray
(usually that will pause the update for the next 4 weeks). we asked you to do this last lab so you might
be good.

2) Windows Activation.
 Ensures a valid Windows license has been purchased.
 You have 30 days after installation to activate or your background will turn black,
and you will have a note appear at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen
saying that you have a non-genuine or pirated
copy of Windows.
The following steps will show you where you will
go to enter your Windows activation key:
a) Open Start Menu > Type Windows Activate
a window will pop up showing your activation
status.
b) Click on Change Product Key
c) Here is where you should type the Windows
activation key, but we will not do it, just

3) Windows Activation in UDST


To activate windows in the university, we must follow a
different way.
1. Click on the start menu  type cmd  then select the
option Run as Administrator.
In the command prompt black window, type the following two commands and press Enter.
slmgr -skms 172.18.32.58
Wait for a few seconds if things are ok you will get this message.

If your windows fail to activate then go do some


other tasks, and after a few minutes restart the
computer and try the steps again.

4) Install Application
1. Firefox:
Install Firefox on your computer, don’t forget to Pin it to the Start menu and Task Bar.
2. Zip application:
Microsoft Windows offers a basic Zipping ability. You can test that simply by
creating a folder on the desktop and adding a few files, then zip them. Please test
compressing a few files using the Windows zipping tool.
Many other zip applications can offer much better compression, WINRAR is one
of the best applications, and it gives you free access, and it is one of the best
applications. Please install.

3. Chrome & Microsoft Office:


Because the internet might be slow in the lab, you can install Chrome and Office
from one of the instructor Servers, to access the instructor server, you must press
+R, then in the run windows, type one of the server’s IP address \\192.168.26.102 OR
\\192.168.26.100 OR, \\192.168.26.99 it might ask for username then use student and
leave the password empty.
1. Install Chrome and set it as the default browser. If you don’t know how then Google it.
2. Install Microsoft Office, however, keep in mind that Office comes as a package that
includes multiple applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher,
and Access, and by default all these applications will be installed, however in this class, we will
not install all of them (I don’t want Access and Publisher).
3. PIN Chrome and Word, Excel, PowerPoint to the Start menu and to the Task Bar

From the instructor Server, copy the Windows7.iso, to your desktop (just copy don’t
open or do anything, we need that next class) if the server is busy go do some other steps and try late
or try another server.

4. Acrobat Reader: it will try to push some extra software so be careful.


 Download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader, don’t fall for the extra application,
Many applications (including Adobe) try to push extra applications while installing their
Apps to make some Advertisement money, be careful and read what you are getting on the
screen Adobe will try to sneak McAfee Antivirus.
 Start it when done.
 Go to one of the instructor servers  Application  copy the file Hello
INFT1201 Students.pdf to your desktop and open it.
 In what application did it open? __________________
 Set Acrobat Reader as the default application to access the pdf files.
5. Putty:
Putty is one of the applications you as students will use a lot during your study. It is a
program that allows you to remotely access servers. You will use this program in
courses such as Linux, Web Development, and many other cases.
 Google the application and install it. Make sure you install the correct version
for your windows.

6. Antivirus software
Microsoft Windows 10 & 11 comes by default with Windows Security antivirus “or
as they used to call it, Windows Defender”, However, the market is full of other
options, and almost all of them will give at least 1-month free demo “some are free”.
In this lab, you have the choice to select which one you want to try out of these
options and install it on your computer no need to run a full scan it will take time:
o Kaspersky Internet Security
o AVG
 Try updating the antivirus after the installation if the internet is slow, you can skip this step.
 Run a quick virus scan for your USB drive if you don’t have your USB borrow
one from a co-student.

7. GIMP graphic application.


GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed
program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring.
It has many capabilities.
 Download and install GIMP,
 Start it when done.

5) Task Manager
Go to Task Manager on your computer and check if any of the applications that you
installed have been configured to Auto Start:

Control Panel
1) Time & Languages
1. Check your computer timing, is it correct?  Yes,  NO
Why do you think it is wrong? To answer check the time zone of your computer

2. Set the Time Zone to “Kuwait/Riyadh” and verify that your computer timing is
correct.

3. Set regional settings to Saudi Arabia, check the time and the date on your
desktop lower-right cornet.

4. Set regional setting back to USA.
5. Add the Arabic Language to the keyboard or any other language you prefer.

2) Mouse setting Options


Mouse settings can be found under the control panel, and are some of the basic settings:
1. Left-handed: switch the functions of the left button and right button of the
mouse to help the left-handed guys. Try switching your mouse to Left-Hand

Don’t forget to set back to the right hand.
2. Pointer Speed: it controls the speed of the pointer moves on the Screen.
3. Pointer Shape: you can change your mouse cursor shape.

3) Screen & Display


1. Change the Background photo of your desktop.
2. Change Screen Resolution.
What is your current screen resolution?
3. Change the resolution to higher and lower numbers. What is the impact?

4. Change the photo of your Lock Screen


5. Go to the screen saver option and select any screen saver you prefer.
6. Themes & Colors: change the theme color of your computer to a color of your
choice.
7. Rotate Screen: most users prefer to use the Screen in landscape format;
however, in some cases especially when users work with long files like Excel
sheets or programming, they might prefer the portrait.

4) Power Options
1. Set Screen off time to 45 minutes and
Computer Sleep time to 1 hour.

2. Keep in mind that laptops have


fewer extra options than desktops,

5) Registry Editor, Lockout screen Time out


During the theory class, we presented a situation about using the Registry Editor
“Regedit” to get the option of changing the time out for the Windows Lockout
screen, and in this part of the lab, you guys will try that.

6) Font Options
Computers come loaded with a set of fonts that you can use; however, the internet is
full of millions of fancy fonts that could be beneficial. You can use Google to search for
fonts and download them.
1. Visit https://www.dafont.com/ and download one of the fonts you like.
2. The downloaded file will be in ZIP format.

3. UNZIP the downloaded file to your


desktop.
4. Go to the Control Panel search for
the fonts folder and open it.
5. Copy the font file from the
unzipped folder to the font folder.
6. Now start Microsoft Word “or
WordPad in case you don’t have Microsoft Word” create a new file, write your name in the file,
and change the font of the name to the new font that you installed.

7) The Clipboard app


Copy and paste are very important features; usually, you could copy one thing using
Crtl+C, then paste it somewhere else using Ctrl+V, but you can have just the last
item you copied.
Windows 10 has a new clipboard that store multiple copied
data, and you can re-use them when needed.
1. Press the Windows +V
2. A window shows the clipboard history.
3. Turn this ON
4. Now to test, visit any webpage e.g., www.aljazeera.net, and copy Multiple
Texts and Photos from that page.
5. Go to Microsoft Word and start a new document.
6. Now, instead of using Ctrl+V try +V
7. You can select from the copied history.

8) Remove Programs
As we install applications, sometimes we might need to remove them from the
computer, search how to do this and remove the antivirus applications that you
installed earlier.
