Section 4 – 4 Notes
Complex Numbers

Review:
1) List the first 15 perfect squares.

2) Express the following in simplest radical form:

a) √ 49 b) √ 24 c) 5 √ 32

What happens if you are asked to simplify √−16 ?

When you have a negative under the square root symbol it is known as an ______________________.
The ______________________________________ is defined to be i2 = -1. The number i is the
principal square root of -1; that is, √ −1=i .

Numbers in the form 6i, -2i, and i √ 3 are called __________________________________________.

They are square roots of negative real numbers.
1
Simplify: Express each number in terms of i and simplify.

1. √−36 2. −√−81 3. 3

4. √−3 5. −√−10 6. √−20

Products of Pure Imaginary Numbers

Simplify:
10. i31 11. i72 12. i24

13. i18 14. -5i(3i) 15. -3i3(7i)

16. √−20 ∙ √−12 17. √−6 ∙ √−1 5

Equations with Pure Imaginary Solutions

Solve the following for x.

18. x2 = 36 19. x2 = 9

3
20. x2 + 64 = 0 21. 4x2 + 100 = 0

Operations with Complex Numbers

Consider 2+3i. Since 2 is a real number and 3i is a pure imaginary number, the terms are not like
terms and cannot be combined. This type of expression is called a complex number.

Complex number: any number that can be written in the form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers
and i is the imaginary unit. "a" is called the ____________________, and "b" is called the
________________________________

Examples: 5 + 2i, 7 - 3i

22. Find the values of x and y that make 3x - 5 + (y - 3)i = 7 + 6i

(HINT: set the real parts equal to each other and the imaginary parts equal to each other)

4
23. Find the values of x and y that make the equation true.
5x + 1 + (3 + 2y)i = 2x - 2 + (y - 6)i

Add and Subtract Complex Numbers

To add/subtract complex numbers, you combine the like terms.

24. (5 - 7i) + (2 + 4i) =

25. (4 + 6i) - (-1 + 2i) =

To multiply complex numbers, use FOIL.

26. (3 + 2i)(5 - 3i)

27. In an AC circuit, the voltage (V), current (C) and impedance (I) are related by the formula V = CI.
Find the voltage in a circuit with current 2 + 4i amps and impedance 9 - 3i ohms.

5
Divide Complex Numbers

Two complex numbers in the form a + bi and a - bi are called ____________________________. The
product of complex conjugates is always a real number.

You cannot have an imaginary number in the denominator of a fraction.

Steps:
1) _____________________________________________________________________
2) _________________________________

3+6 i 1−i
