Lesson Plan for Class 8 Mathematics – Terminating and Non-Terminating Decimals

Grade: 8
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Terminating and Non-Terminating Decimals
Duration: 40 minutes
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

 Define and understand the concept of terminating and non-terminating

decimals.
 Identify whether a decimal is terminating or non-terminating.
 Differentiate between non-terminating repeating (recurring) decimals
and non-terminating non-repeating (irrational) decimals.

Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 minutes)

 Begin with a quick review of decimals and fractions.

 Introduce the concept of terminating and non-terminating decimals by
asking students if they have noticed that some decimals stop after a
few digits while others continue without end.

Explanation and Concept Development (15 minutes)

1. Define Terminating Decimals

o Explain that a terminating decimal has a finite number of digits
after the decimal point (e.g., 0.5, 2.75).
o Show examples by converting simple fractions to decimals (e.g.,
1/2 = 0.5, 3/4 = 0.75) and explain why they end.

2. Define Non-Terminating Decimals

o Explain that non-terminating decimals go on infinitely and never
end.
o Differentiate between:
 Non-Terminating Repeating (Recurring) Decimals:
Decimals that have a repeating pattern, such as 0.333...
(1/3) or 0.666... (2/3).
 Non-Terminating Non-Repeating (Irrational)
Decimals: Decimals that continue indefinitely without any
repeating pattern, such as π (3.14159…) and √2 (1.414…).
Guided Practice (10 minutes)

 Write a list of fractions on the board and ask students to convert them
into decimals. Have students determine if each decimal is terminating
or non-terminating.
 Examples:
o 1/2 (0.5 - terminating)
o 2/3 (0.666... - non-terminating repeating)
o 1/4 (0.25 - terminating)
o 1/7 (0.142857… - non-terminating repeating)
o √2 (non-terminating non-repeating)
 Ask students why they think some decimals end while others continue
indefinitely.

Activity (5 minutes)

 Give students a short list of decimal numbers and ask them to classify
each as:
o Terminating
o Non-terminating repeating
o Non-terminating non-repeating
 Sample decimals: 0.75, 0.8181..., 3.14159…

Conclusion and Recap (5 minutes)

 Summarize the main points:

o Terminating decimals have a finite end.
o Non-terminating decimals continue indefinitely and can either be
repeating (rational) or non-repeating (irrational).
 Answer any final questions and clarify any confusion.

Assessment

 Quick exit quiz: Provide three numbers for students to classify as

terminating, non-terminating repeating, or non-terminating non-
repeating.

Homework

 Write five examples each of terminating and non-terminating decimals

and classify them.
