IMDB Movie Analysis

❖ Project Description: -
The dataset provided is related to IMDB Movies. As a data analyst you need to find
what factors influence the success of a movie on IMDB. Here success can be
defined by high IMDB ratings. The impact of this problem is significant for movie
producers, directors, and investors who want to understand what makes a movie
successful to make informed decisions in their future projects. Your analysis should
aim to provide actionable insights that can help stakeholders make informed
decisions.

❖ Approach: -

1. Clean the data like dropping duplicates and the columns which are not
relevant for analysis.
2. Then handling the missing values and the outliers are treated.
3. Create the table format to the dataset which makes it easy to understand and
relate.
4. Do the analysis using different business formulas, functions and tools like
Pivot table and create visualizations for stake holders.
5. Create a story based on the insights derived from the analysis.

❖ Insights: -

1. Cleaning the data: -

Raw Data –
Raw data had 5044 rows and 16 columns.
There were 45 duplicate rows which were removed and we got 4998 records.
We deleted the missing values rows of directors, budgets and gross as without that
the movie analysis can’t be done.
After cleaning the data, we got to 3856 rows.
Then we deleted all those columns which were irrelevant for analysis.
With the data we created table.

 2. Analysis: -
A. Movie Genre Analysis: Analyse the distribution of movie genres and their impact
on the IMDB score.
• Task: Determine the most common genres of movies in the dataset. Then, for
each genre, calculate descriptive statistics (mean, median, mode, range,
variance, standard deviation) of the IMDB scores.

There are 763 unique combinations of Genres out of which Drama genre has the
highest count of movies.
Manipulating the 'genres' column to separate multiple genres for each single movie
gives 23 unique Genres.

The Duration of every Genre is greater than 100 minutes except Film-Noir genre
movie but only one movie is there of such genre.

C. Language Analysis: Situation: Examine the distribution of movies based on their

language.
• Task: Determine the most common languages used in movies and analyse
their impact on the IMDB score using descriptive statistics.
The Telugu language has the highest IMDB rated movies but only a single movie but
the Persian has the highest average IMDB rating.
English language is most commonly used language in movies with an average of
6.42 IMDB rating.

D. Director Analysis: Influence of directors on movie ratings.

• Task: Identify the top directors based on their average IMDB score and
analyse their contribution to the success of movies using percentile
calculations.

The directors with highest percentile score of 7.5 by imdb rating are Tony
Kaye,Charles Chaplin, Ron Fricke, Majid Majidi, Damien Chazelle, Alfred
Hitchcock,Sergio Leone, Christopher Nolan,S.S. Rajamouli, Richard Marquand,
Marius A. Markevicius, Asghar Farhadi, Lenny Abrahamson and Lee Unkrich.

The Top 10 successful directors with high number of movies and high IMDB score
are Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott,
Tim Burton, Steven Soderbergh, Spike Lee, Robert Zemeckis and Oliver Stone.

E. Budget Analysis: Explore the relationship between movie budgets and their
financial success.
• Task: Analyse the correlation between movie budgets and gross earnings, and
identify the movies with the highest profit margin.
There is low or weak correlation between budget and gross earning of movies.
Result: -
1. There are 23 unique genres of movies and the 3856 movies are based on 763
unique combinations of genres.
2. Drama Genre has the highest number of movies followed by comedy.
3. Considering a significant number of movies, the biography genre movies have
highest average imdb rating of 7.14.
4. The average movie duration is 110 minutes approximately.
5. The Duration of every Genre is greater than 100 minutes except Film-Noir
genre movie but only one movie is there of such genre.

6. There is very weak correlation between movie duration and imdb score.
7. The Telugu language has the highest IMDB rated movies but only a single
movie and considering significant count of movies the Persian language has
the highest average IMDB rating of 8.13.
8. English language is most commonly used language in movies with an
average of 6.42 IMDB rating.
9. Based on average imdb score the director Tony Kaye is the most successful
director with an average of 8.6 but considering the cumulative score of imdb
rating and the number of movies the director Steven Spielberg has done 25
number of movies with a cumulative imdb score of 188.
10. Avatar is the highest profitable movie directed by James Cameron.
11. There is no correlation between movie budgets and gross earnings as the
correlation coefficient is 0.1.

It was a greater learning experience by working on this excel project. I learnt a lot
from cleaning data to handling missing values I was able to create different charts
as per the requirement to provide meaningful business insights. I understood the
role of a data analyst working in entertainment and media domain.
