Lesson 6 – The spread of the web

Lesson 6: Navigating the web

Introduction
In this lesson learners will utilise the skills they have learned throughout this unit to bring
together their web pages and implement working navigation to produce a functioning
website. When linking these pages, learners should add content where appropriate. By
reviewing what they have created, learners will also refresh their memory for a
summative assessment of their learning at the end of the lesson.

Learning objectives
● Implement navigation to complete a functioning website
● Complete summative assessment

Key vocabulary
Navigation, hyperlinks

Preparation
You will need:
● Slides
● Activities:
○ Previously created web pages from lessons 1-5
● Assessment:
○ Spinning the web: Summative assessment questions
○ Spinning the web: Summative assessment answers

Assessment opportunities
Learners reinforce prior learning by creating another webpage that consolidates their
understanding. They will also have time to reorganise this site as a means for some last-
minute revision in preparation for a summative assessment at the end of the lesson.

The assessment will test learners’ on the knowledge they have built up over the last six
lessons, and will give a clear indication of how much of it they have understood.

Lesson 6 – The spread of the web

Outline plan
Please note that the slide deck labels the activities in the top right-hand corner to help
you navigate the lesson.

*Timings are rough guides

Starter Working hyperlink or not?

activity
(Slides 2–3) Display slide 2 when learners enter the room. Ask them to identify the the
hyperlinks which are structurally correct and the errors that would cause
5 mins the others to fail.

Activity 1 Final web page

(Slide 5)
Learners will now create the last page of their website. This web page
25 mins should be called ‘How to build your first web page’. Learners should write
up a short step by step guide on the steps required to make a web page,
including what software is needed and how to test it. They should use the
prompts on the slide as a guide.

Activity 2 Web pages to website!

(Slides 12-14)
Having revisited what the structure of a hyperlink should look like in the
15 mins starter activity, learners should now open all of the web pages they have
created in this unit:
● Homepage
● How to build your first web page
● HTML
● CSS
● Searching
● Advanced search operators

For each of these pages, learners should implement uniform navigation

across the all pages so that navigation is possible to and from any page.
For the homepage, you could suggest combining the <img> and <a href>
tags to make hyperlinks from images too.

Assessment Distribute the multiple choice assessment and allow sufficient time for
(Slide 15) completion.
