Lesson 6 – Showcase
Lesson 6: Showcase
Introduction
In this lesson learners compare vector images with bitmaps images. Learners consider
which image type best suits which situation. Learners are given a final chance to make
small changes to their project before they review it and share it with the rest of the class.
The lesson ends with a multiple choice quiz.
Learning objectives
● Explain key differences between vector and bitmap images
● Outline which image type best suits which uses
● Evaluate their image against a rubric
Key vocabulary
Bitmap, logo, illustration, icon
Preparation
Subject knowledge:
You need to be familiar with:
● The basic tools and features of vector editing software
● The types of vector graphics listed under key vocabulary
Assessment opportunities
Activity 1: Learners should be able to describe which image type best suits which usage
case.
Activity 2: Learners have the opportunity to peer assess the work of another pair using
an assessment rubric.
Outline plan
Please note that the slide deck labels the activities in the top right-hand corner to help
you navigate the lesson.
There are clear differences between these two images. Obviously, one is
a vector graphic and the other is a real photograph (raster graphic).
Learners may point out specific differences with colours, etc. Slide 5
explains that the main difference is the fine detail that can be seen in the
real photo.
Use slides 6 to 9 to aid in explaining what vector graphics are and what
their advantages are over raster graphics. Use this opportunity to assess
learners’ knowledge of vector graphics. On slide 9, ask learners if they
think font styles are vector or raster graphics and to justify their answer.
(Fonts are vectors because they can be scaled without losing image
quality.)
Show slide 10. Tell learners that with a partner they are going to write two
lists. One list should be where the use of vectors is best suited and the
other should be for bitmaps. There are some suggested uses on the slide
to which students can add their own. In some cases there isn’t a best
option, so the situation would appear in both lists.
Use slide 11 to explain the instructions for improving the project. Pairs
20 mins need to make small changes to their project to make it better meet the
requirements of the rubric.
After 15 minutes, show slide 12 and ask learners to review their work a
final time. On the assessment rubric, they should mark the statements
that they believe they’ve managed to meet with their vector graphics
project.
Plenary Showcase
(Slide 14)
Show learners a range of different projects that have been completed.
10 mins You may also wish to show work completed by other classes. Ask learners
to think about what the creators have done well and whether they can
suggest any improvements. If time allows, ask learners to voice their
opinions on the projects being viewed.
