Part Design in SOLIDWORKS – Sketching on Round Geometry

and Replicating Sketch Elements

Prepared by:

Department of Computer Engineering

Faculty of Information and Telecommunication Engineering
Section A
Overview
A.1. Can we sketch on Round Geometry?
Round geometry in SOLIDWORKS includes cylindrical, spherical, or other non-planar surfaces.
Sketching on these geometries involves projection techniques that map 2D elements onto 3D
surfaces. To apply features such as extrude, loft etc. to round, cylindrical or spherical surfaces,
we have to start by sketch on Flat 2D plane. For that purpose, we can define new sketch planes
and sketch on those planes. Later we can project the sketch to round surfaces.

A.2. Replicating Sketch Elements in SOLIDWORKS

Replicating sketch elements is a technique that enhances design efficiency by reducing repetitive
work. By utilizing tools such as "Linear Pattern", "Circular Pattern", and "Mirror", designers can
create multiple instances of a sketch or feature in a systematic arrangement. These tools save
time while ensuring uniformity, making them indispensable for designs that involve repeated
features like bolt holes, ribs, or teeth on a gear.

A.3. Objective of the Lab

This lab will guide students through the process of sketching on round geometries and replicating
sketch elements in SOLIDWORKS. By mastering these skills, students will be equipped to
handle complex design challenges, optimize workflows, and produce high-quality models
efficiently.

The final part we will design will look as follows:

Section B
Practical Implementation
B.1. Features Used
The features we will use for this 3D Part Design are as follows:
• Extrude Boss / Base
• Extruded Cut
• Mirror
• Fillet

B.2. Resources Used

• SOLIDWORKS (Version 2022)
• Windows 10

B.3. Steps for Implementation

• Launch the SOLIDWORKS.
• Go to File > New from Top Menu.
• Choose Part, as we are designing a part

• Right Click Top Plane and select sketch option.

• Choose Center Rectangle and choose origin as center.
• Set Dimensions for Rectangle as Length: 140 mm and Width: 140 mm
• Next, select Circle and draw circle sketch as follows

• The dimension of circle is diameter: 16mm

B.4. Mirror Entities

Mirror Entities will replicate the sketch entity along certain sketch plane. This allows to copy
parts on symmetric geometries without doing same thing again and again. We will replicate
circle on all four corners of the Rectangle.

• Select Mirror Entities from top bar

• Select Circle in Entities to Mirror
• Select Right Plane in Mirror About

• This will mirror the Circle on top right corner of rectangle

• Next, we want to replicate / mirror both on top left and top right corner to bottom corners
• Press and Hold Ctrl Key and select both circles, then select Mirror Entities again
• Select Front Plane in Mirror About

• This will mirror both circle sketch entities on bottom corners.

• Now we are done with this sketch.

• Exit the sketch

B.5. Extrude and Solid Geometry

• Extrude the sketch we just created with Depth: 10mm
• Now choose one face of the solid geometry and create new sketch
• In new sketch, draw circle of Diameter: 100mm

• Exit the sketch and Extrude this circle to Depth: 100mm

• Use Fillet to round the top and bottom region of the cylinder as follows
• Also use fillet on all vertices of the rectangle to make the geometry as follows

B.6. New Reference Geometry

To make the new geometry on round surface of cylinder, we will create new reference geometry
and use it.

• Click Reference Geometry and select Plane

• In First Reference select Front Plane
• In the Distance from first reference (D1), set it to 85 mm

• Select the highlighted lines and click Convert Entities

• Select upper line, click Offset Entities

• Offset upper line to 10mm

• Offset lower line to 30 mm
• Delete the Original Lines

• Join the Ends of Lines to form Closed geometry, with the Line Sketch
• Select this Sketch and Extrude
• In the Direction 1 of Extrude Dialog, select Up To Surface
• Select the Outer Face of Cylinder, that is highlighted in Pink Color

• Now the part will look as follows

• Use Fillet on the Vertices and Edges
Lab Task
Mirror the Geometry on Other Side of
Cylinder
Objective:
The goal of this task is familiarizing with the Mirror Pattern Feature. You need to create the part
as follows. You need to use Mirror Feature and replicate the Geometry on other side of Cylinder

Task Description:
Using SOLIDWORKS, replicate the Geometry we created on circular face on other side of
cylinder

Instructions:
1. Open the part we created earlier
2. Select the geometry (Extrude) and Fillets on Cylinder that we created.
3. Select the Mirror from Features
4. Use Front Face as Mirror About Plane.
