By William Shakespeare
Directed By: Zainab Zia
Scene 1: The Ghost’s Revelation
(Setting: Nighttime on the castle platform. Hamlet meets the Ghost.)
Hamlet: Who are you? What do you want from me?
Ghost: I am your father’s spirit. I was murdered.
Hamlet: Murdered? By who?
Ghost: Your uncle, Claudius. He poisoned me to take the crown and marry
your mother.
Hamlet: That villain! I’ll get revenge!
Ghost: Be careful. Don’t let anger destroy you.
(The Ghost disappears. Hamlet looks determined.)

Scene 2: Claudius and Polonius Discuss Hamlet

(Setting: A private room in the castle. Claudius and Polonius talk.)
Claudius: Polonius, Hamlet is acting strangely. Do you know why?
Polonius: I think he’s in love with my daughter, Ophelia. That might be the
reason for his madness.
Claudius: Could it be something else?
Polonius: Let Ophelia speak to him while we listen. We’ll find out the truth.
Claudius: Good idea. We must know what he’s planning.

Scene 3: Hamlet and Ophelia Meet

(Setting: A hall in the castle. Claudius and Polonius hide nearby to spy on
them.)
Ophelia: My lord, I’m returning these letters you gave me.
Hamlet: Letters? You should’ve burned them! Women are full of lies. Go to
a nunnery!
Ophelia: Why are you being so cruel?
Hamlet: Your father sent you, didn’t he? I know his tricks!
(Hamlet storms off. Ophelia weeps as Claudius and Polonius step out of
hiding.)
Polonius: See? He’s heartbroken over Ophelia.
Claudius: No, he suspects something. We need to keep an eye on him.

Scene 4: The Play Within a Play

(Setting: The castle hall. Hamlet arranges a play to test Claudius.)
Hamlet (to Horatio): Watch Claudius. The play shows a king poisoned by his
brother. If he reacts, we’ll know the truth.
(The actors perform the play. A king is poisoned by his brother.)
Claudius (standing suddenly): Stop this! Turn on the lights!
(Claudius storms out.)
Hamlet (to Horatio): Did you see that? He’s guilty! He killed my father!
Horatio: Yes, it’s clear now.

Scene 5: Claudius Prays

(Setting: A private chapel. Claudius kneels to pray.)
Claudius: My crime is too terrible. I killed my brother to steal the crown.
How can I be forgiven?
(Hamlet enters silently and sees Claudius praying.)
Hamlet (to himself): Now I could kill him. But if I do it while he’s praying, he
might go to heaven. No, I’ll wait for a better moment.
(Hamlet leaves as Claudius continues to pray.)

Scene 6: Hamlet Confronts Gertrude

(Setting: Gertrude’s room. Hamlet confronts his mother.)
Gertrude: Hamlet, you’ve upset your uncle and the court. What is wrong
with you?
Hamlet: What’s wrong with me? What’s wrong with you? You married the
man who killed my father!
Gertrude: What?
Hamlet: Look at this picture of my father—so noble. Now look at Claudius—
a murderer!
(The Ghost appears, visible only to Hamlet.)
Hamlet: Look, Mother! My father’s ghost is here!
Gertrude: I don’t see anything. You’re imagining it!
Ghost: Hamlet, calm down. Don’t hurt your mother. Stay focused on justice.
Hamlet: Yes, Father.
(The Ghost vanishes. Gertrude looks shaken.)

Scene 7: The Final Confrontation

(Setting: The throne room. Hamlet confronts Claudius.)
Hamlet: Claudius! I know what you did. You killed my father and stole his
throne.
Claudius: Guards, seize him!
Hamlet: No! Justice will be served! (Hamlet stabs Claudius.)
Claudius: I’m dying!
(Hamlet collapses, wounded from an earlier fight.)
Horatio: Hamlet, stay with me!
Hamlet: Tell my story, Horatio. Denmark is free. Farewell.
(Hamlet dies. Horatio mourns beside him.)

Closing Lines (Horatio)

Horatio: And so, ends the tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. A story of
betrayal, madness, and revenge.
(Curtain closes.)

This version uses simple and modern language while retaining the essence of the
story. It’s easy to understand and fits into a 15-minute performance.
