Game Design Principles

BSCGD III-A/B

Course Instructor: Mr. Altaf Hussain

Lecture 6
Game Genres and Platforms
Exploring different game genres

• In game design, a game genre refers to a category or classification

that defines a game based on its gameplay mechanics, thematic
elements, and overall style.
• Game genres help players identify the type of gaming experience
they can expect and allow developers to create games that cater to
specific preferences or interests.
• There are numerous game genres which include the following:
1. Action: Fast-paced gameplay focusing on reflexes, combat, and often
includes elements of exploration and platforming.
Example: "Devil May Cry" series, "Bayonetta," "Uncharted“

2. Adventure: Emphasizes exploration, puzzle-solving, story-driven

narratives, and character progression.
Example: "The Legend of Zelda" series, "Tomb Raider," "Firewatch“

3. Role-Playing Games (RPGs): Involves character customization, quests,

narrative-driven stories, and progression through leveling up and
acquiring new abilities.
Example: "The Elder Scrolls" series, "Final Fantasy," "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt“

4. Simulation: Simulates real-life activities or scenarios, such as managing

cities, building civilizations, or controlling characters' lives
Example: "The Sims," "Cities: Skylines," "Microsoft Flight Simulator"
5. Strategy: Requires tactical decision-making, resource management, and
often involves controlling units or civilizations to achieve specific
objectives.
Example: "Civilization" series, "StarCraft," "XCOM“

6. Sports and Racing: Involves competitive gameplay centered around

sports, racing, or athletic activities.
Example: "FIFA" series, "Gran Turismo," "Mario Kart"

7. Puzzle: Challenges players with solving puzzles, riddles, or logic-based

problems to progress through the game.
Example: "Tetris," "Portal," "The Witness"

8. Horror: Focuses on creating a suspenseful and frightening atmosphere,

often involving survival, exploration, and confronting terrifying elements.
Example: "Resident Evil" series, "Silent Hill," "Amnesia: The Dark Descent"
9. Platformer: Involves traversing levels, overcoming obstacles, and
using precise jumping or movement mechanics.
Example: "Super Mario" series, "Hollow Knight," "Celeste"

10. Fighting: Features one-on-one or multiplayer combat between

characters with various fighting styles and special moves.
Example: "Street Fighter," "Super Smash Bros.," "Mortal Kombat"

• These are just a few examples of game genres, and many games often
combine elements from multiple genres to create unique
experiences.
• Game genres help both developers and players in understanding and
categorizing different gaming experiences based on their core
mechanics and thematic elements.
Platform-specific design considerations
• Platform-specific design considerations in game design involve
tailoring and optimizing various aspects of a game to suit the unique
capabilities, constraints, and user experiences of specific gaming
platforms.
• Each platform, such as PC, consoles (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox,
Nintendo), mobile devices (iOS, Android), or virtual reality (VR)
systems, has its hardware, controls, display capabilities, and user
interactions, which influence how games are designed and optimized.
Here are some key considerations for different platforms:
1. Controls and Input Devices:

• Console Controllers: Designing games that utilize the specific buttons, triggers,
and joysticks available on console controllers.
• Touchscreens: Optimizing user interfaces and gameplay mechanics for
touch-based interactions on mobile devices.
• Mouse and Keyboard: Designing for precise input and complex controls typically
available on PCs.
2. Graphics and Performance:

• Hardware Capabilities: Adjusting graphical fidelity, resolutions, and

performance to match the capabilities of the platform's hardware
(CPU, GPU, memory).
• Frame Rate and Optimization: Ensuring smooth gameplay by
optimizing frame rates and reducing hardware-specific bottlenecks.
3. User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX):
• Screen Size and Layout: Designing UI elements and text sizes suitable for
different screen sizes and aspect ratios.
• HUD (Heads-Up Display): Adapting HUD elements to be visible and
unobtrusive based on the platform's display size and resolution.
• Menu Navigation: Optimizing menu systems for various input methods
(controller, touch, mouse).
4. Platform-Specific Features and Integration:
• Console-Specific Features: Utilizing unique features of consoles, such as
motion controls, touchpads, or specific hardware functionalities (e.g.,
DualSense controller features on PlayStation).
• Mobile Device Capabilities: Leveraging GPS, accelerometers, or other
sensors available on mobile devices for gameplay mechanics or augmented
reality (AR) features.
5. Performance and Optimization:
• Load Times: Minimizing loading times and optimizing asset loading for
faster performance on specific platforms.
• Memory Management: Ensuring efficient use of memory resources
and minimizing memory footprint for smoother gameplay.

6. Multiplayer and Networking:

• Online Services: Adapting networking components to leverage
specific online services or features provided by different platforms.
• Cross-Platform Compatibility: Considering cross-platform play or
interactions where applicable and feasible.
7. Compliance and Regulations:
• Platform-Specific Guidelines: Adhering to platform-specific guidelines,
certification requirements, and regulations imposed by platform
holders (e.g., content ratings, submission processes).
