PRE BOARD EXAMINATIONS REVISION

Class – XII Subject – Physics (042)

Time Allowed: 1HOUR

SECTION A

1. A beam of α- particles projected along +X-axis, experiences a force due to a magnetic field along
the +Y-axis. What is the direction of the magnetic field?

2. The motion of copper plate is damped, when it is allowed to oscillate between the two poles of a
magnet. What is the cause of this damping?

3. Welders wear special goggles or face masks with glass windows to protect their eyes from
electromagnetic radiation. Name the radiations and write the range of their wavelength.

4. When light travels from a rarer to a denser medium, the speed decreases. Does this decrease in
speed imply a decrease in the energy carried by the light wave? Justify your answer.

5. Show graphically, the variation of de-Broglie wavelength (λ) with the potential (V) through which
an electron is accelerated from rest.

SECTION B

6. Given a uniform electric field E = 2x 103 N/C ȋ, find the flux of the field through a square of side
20cm, whose plane is parallel to the Y-Z plane. What would be the flux through the same square if the
plane makes an angle of 30ᴼ with the x-axis?

7.Three cells of emf E, 2E and 5E have internal resistances r, 2r and 3r respectively along with
variable resistance R as shown in the figure. Find the expression for the current. Plot a graph for
variation of current with R.

8. A rectangular loop of wire of size 2.5 cm x 4cm carries steady current of 1ampere. A straight wire
carrying 2A current is kept near the loop as shown. If the loop and the wire are coplanar, find the (i)
torque acting on the loop and (ii) the magnitude and the direction of the force on the loop due to the
current carrying wire.
9. Three electrical circuits having AC sources of variable frequency are as shown in the figures.
Initially, the current flowing in each of these is same. If the frequency of the applied AC source is
increased, how will the current flowing in these circuits be affected? Give the reason for your answer.

10. Use Lenz’s law to determine the direction of induced current in the situation described by
following figures

(i) A wire of irregular shape turning into a circular shape.

(ii) A circular loop being deformed into a narrow straight wire.

11. In an electromagnetic wave, the oscillating electric field having a frequency of 3x10 10 Hz and
amplitude of 30V/m propagates in the positive X-direction.

(i) What is the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave?

(ii) Write down the expression to represent the corresponding magnetic field.

12. Draw a schematic arrangement of a reflecting telescope (Cassegrain) showing how rays coming
from a distant object are received at the eyepiece. Write its two important advantages over a refracting
telescope.

SECTION C
13. A parallel plate capacitor is charged by a battery. After sometime, the battery is disconnected and
a dielectric slab with its thickness equal to the plate separation is inserted between the plates. How
will the following be affected?

(i) The capacitance of the capacitor

(ii) Potential difference between the plates, and

(iii) The energy stored in the capacitor

Justify your answer in each case.

OR

Two parallel plate capacitors X and Y have the same area of the plates and same separation between
them. X has air between the plates while Y contains a dielectric medium of dielectric constant K=4.

(i) Calculate the capacitance of each capacitor if equivalent of the combination is 4μF.

(ii) Calculate the potential difference between the plates of X and Y.

(iii) What is the ratio of electrostatic energy stored in X and Y?

14. State Gauss’ law in electrostatics. Using this law, derive an expression for the electric field due to
a uniformly charged infinite plane sheet.

15. Show that the frequency of revolution of a charged particle (in the XY plane), in a uniform
magnetic field B (B = B0 ^K ) is independent of its speed. Which practical machine makes the use of
this fact? What is the frequency of the alternating electric field used in this machine?

16. How is a wavefront defined? Using Huygens’s construction, draw a diagram how a plane wave
gets refracted when it is incident on the surface separating a rarer medium from a denser medium.
Hence, verify Snell’s law of refraction.

17. Using photon picture of light, show how Einstein’s photoelectric equation can be established.
Write two features of photoelectric effect which cannot be explained by wave theory.

18. Describe briefly with the help of a diagram, the role of the two important processes involved in
the formation of a p-n junction. The circuit shown in the figure has two oppositely connected ideal
diodes connected in parallel. Find the current flowing through each diode in the circuit.
19. Differentiate between three segments of a transistor on the basis of their size and level of doping.
Draw the circuit diagram of a common emitter amplifier using an n-p-n transistor.

20. State Bohr’s postulates for explaining the spectrum of hydrogen atoms. Calculate the energy of the
photon emitted during a transition of the electron from the first excited state to the ground state. In
which region of the electromagnetic spectrum does this transition lie?

21. State the principle on which the working of an optical fibre is based. Trace the path of a ray of
light passing through a glass prism ABC as shown in the figure. If the refractive index of glass is √3,
then find out the value of the angle of emergence from the prism

22. State with the help of a circuit diagram, the working principle of a meter bridge. Obtain the
expression used for determining the unknown resistance. What happens if the galvanometer and cell
are interchanged at the balance point of the bridge? Why is it considered important to obtain the
balance point near the midpoint of the wire?

23.. (i) Draw a labelled diagram of a step-up transformer. Obtain the ratio of secondary to primary
voltage in terms of number of turns and currents in the two coils.

(ii) A power transmission line feeds input power at 2200V to a step down transformer with its primary
windings having 3000 turns. Find the number of turns in the secondary to get the power output at
220V.

24.State Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. The given figure shows a rectangular conductor
PQRS in which the conductor PQ is free to move in a uniform magnetic field B perpendicular to the
plane of the paper. The field extends from x= 0 to x= b and is zero for x > b. Assume that only the
arm PQ possesses resistance r. When the arm PQ is pulled outward from x = 0 to x = 2b and is then
moved backward to x = 0 with constant speed v, obtain the expression for the flux and the induced
emf. Sketch the variations of these quantities with distance 0 ≤ x ≤2b .
25. (i)Explain two features to distinguish between the interference pattern in Young’s double slit

(ii) A monochromatic light of wavelength 500nm is incident normally on a single slit of width 0.2mm
to produce a diffraction pattern. Find the angular width of the central maximum obtained on the
screen.
