Part – I: Assignments - 1 (Q# 1, & 4)

1) A reinforced concrete column having of 360mm x300mm cross sectional dimensions is used to
transfer factored load of 600KN concentrated load, 70KN/m uniformly distributed load and
350KNm end moment from grade beam of class room building to underneath soil and it is loaded
as shown in the figure below. The column is part of non-sway frame system (10 Marks). Hint:
self-weight of the beam is included in the given loads

2) The frame shown below is a part of G+2 braced reinforced concrete building. If column AB is
subjected to an axial load of 1000 KN and end moments as shown below and using C20/25 and
S460 materials:
A. Classify column AB as long or short

B. Design column AB with d’/h= 0.1.

C. Draw reinforcement detail

3) A typical flat-slab system of building frame as shown below is subjected to floor live load of 4 𝑘𝑁⁄𝑚2 in
addition to its own weight. Assume weight of floor finish 1 𝑘𝑁⁄𝑚2. Span lengths of each panels of flat-
slab are 𝐿𝑥𝑥𝐿𝑦 = 6.0𝑚𝑥9.0𝑚. Square columns of 500𝑚𝑚𝑥500𝑚𝑚 are assumed. Materials: concrete
C30/37 and steel bar S-500 with Class-I works. Use 𝜙10𝑚𝑚 bar and assume concrete cover 25𝑚𝑚.
Consider 𝐿𝑒𝑓𝑓 = 0.7L

a) Determine thickness of the flat slab for deflection requirement.

b) Determine design load for the slab
c) Refer the above figure and check the adequacy of the slab for punching shear around the
column- 𝑪𝟐. If it is not sufficient, deign the slab for shear.

4) A flat slab shown below is a floor system in Library Building, supported by 300 x 400 columns.
The slab thickness is 250 mm and is subjected to a service live load of 5 KN/m2 and finishing
plus partition load of 1.5kN/m2 in addition to its self-weight. Using concrete grade C-20/25,
concrete unit weight = 25KN/m3 Steel grade S-400, 20mm concrete cover & 12mm diameter
bar:
a) Check the adequacy of the slab for punching shear around the column- C1. If it is not
sufficient, deign the slab for punching shear.
b) Determine all Column strip & Middle strip design bending moments for Strip-1
c) Check the slab for wide beam shear considering Strip-1.

6) The beam shown in figure bellow is monolithic with cantilever slab and it carries load from the
wall, 11.22KN/m, floor finishing, 1.03KN/m along the beam center line and handrail load of
0.25KN/m act at tip of the cantilever in addition to self-weight of the member. Consider the
service live load of 5KN/m2 uniformly distributed over the upper slab surface.
Using concrete grade C-25/30, concrete unit weight=25KN/m3, fyk =400Mpa for Steel,20mm
concrete cover ,16mm diameter for longitudinal bar and 6mm diameter bar for stirrups. Design
the following beam for torsion and shear. All dimensions are in cm.

7) A pre-stressed concrete beam with an eccentric tendon is shown in figure below. The beam is
imposed to carry a uniformly distributed load includes the self-weight is 54KN/m and 100KN
concentrated load at mid span. Compute the extreme fiber stress at the mid-span by applying the
stress and load balancing concepts. Draw the stress distribution across the section at mid-span.
