Hacking the KIP 7170K

Discussion
These printers require a license in order to print without a "Feature Not Enabled" watermark. I didn't know
this when I factory reset it. Luckily I was able to retrieve the code from KIP for free but not everyone who
buys these second-hand will have that opportunity. KIP will charge you 1000+ bucks for a new license
code. Unacceptable.

I'm hoping the license activation validates the code on the printer (t doesn't require internet), then just
sets some registry values which are looked at later to determine if watermarking should be done. If so, it
should be easy to set the specific registry values to enable the printing features without a code from KIP.
The printer runs Windows 7 Embedded.

I'm approaching it from two ways. The attached image shows booting the KIP to an i386 Xubuntu ISO on
a thumb drive and accessing the Windows hard drive. This should be able to be done by anyone with local
access but requires a bit more elbow grease from the end user.

KIP tech here. There is no interest. The watermark can be disabled from the WebUI and driver (have
to do both to make it stick), and print pro and all of their applications are free.

Way to crack the case on this ground breaking discovery tho Sherlock.

Could you tell me the steps do disable? We restarted our KIP 7170 and it has started printing
"Feature not Licensed" on all pdf and cad files we try to print.

Call KIP at 800.252.6793 and give them your machine serial number and tell them it is doing
this and has dropped the code. They will email you a text file with the existing activation code
for that product.

Interest here!

I am having the same issue with my Kip 700M. After resetting, I get a watermark on my prints
saying ‘must purchase post script/ pdf option contact deal.’

Unfortunately the local dealers are saying they can’t help me.

Any ideas? Did you find a work around?
