(An Autonomous Institute affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, Approved by AICTE, New Delhi)

Fourth Semester B.E. Examinations June/July 2024

Theory of Machines
Time: 03:00 Hours Max. Marks: 100
Note : 1. Answer any five questions choosing one full question from each unit.

Unit – I
Marks BL CO PO PSO

1 a) With the help of sketches explain two inversions of a four-bar chain and
10 01 01 01 01
mention one use of each inversion.

b) Explain the terms associated with the Grubler criterion. Also, determine
the degree of freedom of the linkages shown in Figure 1b

10 03 01 01 01

Fig. 1b

2 a) Sketch and explain the crank and slotted lever quick return motion
mechanism. What are its applications? 10 01 01 01 01

b) What is an intermittent motion mechanism? Sketch and explain any one

10 01 01 01 01
of the intermittent motion mechanisms.

Unit – II

3 a) Locate all instantaneous centers for the bar mechanism and slider crank
08 01 02 01 01
mechanism.

b) A four-bar mechanism has the following dimensions:

AB=300 mm, BC=360 mm, CD=360 mm, AD=600 mm (fixed link) &
Angle BAD=60° The crank AB has an angular velocity of 10 rad./ sec in 12 03 02 01 01
clockwise direction. Determine the angular velocities of links BC, CD
and velocity of joint C using graphical method.

4 a) The stroke of the reciprocating steam engine is 400 mm and the length of
the connecting rod is 600 mm. The crank rotates at 300 rpm in the
clockwise direction and the crank is inclined at 30° with the inner dead
center. The center of gravity of the connecting rod is 240 mm away from
20 03 02 01 01
the crank end. By Klein's construction, determine the following:
i) Velocity and acceleration of the piston (ii) Angular velocity
and angular acceleration of the connecting rod. (iii) Velocity
and acceleration of the center of gravity of the connecting rod.
Unit – III
5 a) Define and explain law of gearing. 06 01 03 01 01

b) Two 200 involute spur gears have a module of 7 mm. The addendum is
one module. The larger gear has 62 teeth and the pinion 25 teeth.
Determine: a) Length of path of contact 14 03 03 01 01
b) Arc of contact
c) Contact ratio

6 a) Describe with neat sketches the following gear trains:(i) Compound gear
08 01 03 01 01
train (ii) reverted gear train

b) The sun and planet gears of an epicyclic gear train are shown in fig 5C.
The annular gear D has 100 internal teeth, the sun gear A has 50 external
teeth and planet gear B has 25 external teeth. The gear B meshes with
gear D and gear A. The gear B is carried on the arm E, which rotates
about the centre of annular gear D. If the gear D is fixed and arm rotates
at 20 rpm in clockwise then find the speed of gears A and B.

Roller radius=15 mm and its line of stroke passes through the axis of the
cam.
Minimum radius of cam-----------------40 mm
14 03 04 01 01
Lift of follower----------------------------45 mm
Angle of ascent with SHM -------------900
Angle of descent with uniform acceleration and retardation -----1200
Dwell between ascent and descent -----600
i) Draw the profile of the cam
ii) If cam rotates at uniform speed of 500 rpm, determine the
maximum velocity and acceleration of follower during
ascent.

8 a) Name and explain the different types of followers with neat sketches.

following data.
The axis of the cam is offset by 20 mm
Minimum radius of cam-----------------50 mm
Lift of follower----------------------------40 mm
14 03 04 01 01
Angle of ascent with SHM -------------600
Angle of descent with SHM -----900
Dwell between ascent and descent -----450
