INTRODUCTION:-
These lines are taken from the poem ( ‫)وﺻﻒ اﻟ ﮴ ﻠﻢ‬, which is
written by ( ‫)ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﮲﮲ﺎﻃﻢ اﻟ ﮲ّﺪوي‬,
ّ in this poem the poet says
about the description and the qualities of a good pen.

LINE MEANINGS:-
‫دﻛﮟ‬
‫ﻣﮟ ﮲‬ ‫رﺳ ﮵ ﮴ً ﺎ ﮲‬
‫﮴ ﻠﻤﺎً ﮶‬ ‫إﻟﻰ ﺳ ﮵ّﺪي‬
ّ ‫ أﻫﺪى ﮵‬.1
My master gifted me a graceful dark pen

‫اﻟﺤﺴﮟ‬
‫﮲‬ ‫ﻣﮟ اﻟ ﮴ ّﺪ‬
‫﮲‬ ‫وأرﺳ ﮴ً ﺎ‬
‫ﻣﮟ اﻟﻠّﺆﻟﺆ ﮶‬
‫ أﻋ﮲ ﻠﻰ ﮲‬.1

It is more precious than the pearl, and more graceful than a good figure

‫اﻟﺤﺴﮟ‬
‫﮲‬ ‫اﻟﺬﻛﺮ‬
ّ ‫ﻣﮟ ﮵ ﮳ ﮴ﻌ﮲ ﮵ﻰ‬
‫﮲‬ ‫ ﻫﻮ ﮲ﺣ ﮵ﺮ ﻣﺎ ﮵ﻬﺪى إﻟﻰ‬.1

It is a good gift to those who wish to retain in their deep memory

‫ﻣﮟ‬
‫اﻟﺮ ﮲‬
ّ‫ﻣﮟ ﻣﺎﺣ﮳ ﺪ ﺣ ﮳ﺮ ﮲‬
‫﮲‬ ‫ ﮵ﺎ ﺣ ﮳ّﺬا ﮴ﻠﻚ اﻟﻌﻠﻰ‬.1

How great is that glory! It is filled with the best ink of the time.

How many poor people got wealthy by (the use of) this pen in their hard circumstances(misfortune)

‫﮲‬ ‫و ﮲ﺎل ﻣﺤ﮳ ًﺪا‬ ‫ﻋﺮ ﮳ﻪ‬
ّ‫ﻛﻢ ﺻﺎﻋ﮲ ٍﺮ ﮲‬

How many slavish people became honored by (the use of) this pen and won glory in their country.

‫﮲ﺣﻄ ﮳ﺎت ﺳﺤ ﮳ﺎن اﻟﻠ ﮲‬ ‫ﻛﻢ ﻣ ﮲ ﺤﻢ أﻟ ﮴ ﻰ ﮳ﻪ‬

How many silent people became great orators like Sahban- the great orator!

‫﮲‬ ‫ﻈﻞ ﮵ﻌﺮف‬
ّ ‫﮲‬ ‫ﺎﻣﻞ ﮵ﺴﻤﻮ ﮳ﻪ‬
ٍ ‫ﻛﻢ ﮲ﺣ‬

How many unknown people became superior by(the use of) this pen, and became popular(famous)
‫آﻟﻰ اﻻٕ ﻟــﻪ ذو اﻟﻤ ﮲﮲ﮟ‬ ‫ﺴﻤﺎ ﮳ﻪ و ﮳ﻤﺤ﮳ ﺪه‬
ً ‫﮴‬

With it (the pen) and with it’s greatness, Allah the kind has promised.

‫اﻟﺮ ﮲‬
ّ‫و ﻟﻤﺤ﮳ ﺪه ﮵ﻌ ﮲ﻮ ﮲‬ ‫﮳ﺤﺪه‬
ّ ‫﮴ ﮲ ﺮى اﻻٔﻣﻮر‬

So many settlements are made with its nib end, and the time is recognized by its glory.

‫وﺳﮟ‬
‫﮲‬ ‫ﻣﮟ‬
‫﮵ﻤﺴ ﮵ﻰ ﮲‬
‫﮵ﻬﺐ ﮶‬
ّ ‫﮲‬ ‫﮵ﺮ ﮴ ﻰ اﻟﻠّﺪ ﮵ﻊ ﮳ ﮲ ﮲ ﮶ﻪ‬

The bitten will be awakened by its breath, and he will start walking from his sleepiness.
‫﮲ ﺎٕذا ﮳ﻪ روض أﻋ﮲ ﮲ﮟ‬ ‫﮵ﺴ ﮴ ﻰ اﻟﺤ﮳ ﺪ ﮵ﺐ ﮳ ﮲ ﮳ﻌﻪ‬

The dry land gets watered by its spring, and it will become greenish garden.
‫ﺳﮟ‬
‫ﻣﻮت ذر ﮵ﻊ ﮳ﺎﻟﺮّ ﮲‬ ‫ﺳ ﮵ﻒ ﺻ ﮴ ﮵ﻞ ﮲ ﮵ﻰ اﻟﻮﻋ﮲ ﻰ‬

It is a sharp edged sword in the battle, and it is a quick death on the altar.
‫اﻟ ﮲ ﻜﺮة اﻟﻤﺮﻛﺮ﮲ ﮵ﺔ‪:‬‬

‫اﻟﺴﺎﻋﺮ ﮲ ﮵ﻰ‬
‫ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﮲﮲ﺎﻃﻢ اﻟ ﮲ّﺪوي‪ ،‬﮵ ﮴ ﻮل ﮶ّ‬
‫ّ‬ ‫ﻟﻠﺴﺎﻋﺮ‬
‫ﻫﺬه اﻟﻤ ﮲ﻈﻮﻣﺔ ﮶‬
‫وأﻫﻤ ّ﮵ ﮴ﻪ‬
‫ﻋﮟ ﻣﻮاﺻ ﮲ ﺎت اﻟ ﮴ ﻠﻢ ّ‬
‫ﻫﺬه اﻟﻤ ﮲ﻈﻮﻣﺔ ﮲‬
‫اﻟﺤﺴﮟ‪ ،‬وﻟﻠ ﮴ ﻠﻢ دور ﻛ ﮳ ﮵ﺮ‬
‫﮲‬ ‫اﻟﺬﻛﺮ‬
‫ﻟﻤﮟ ﮵ﺮ ﮵ﺪ ّ‬
‫اﻟ ﮴ ﻠﻢ ﻫﻮ ﺣ﮲ ﮵ﺮ ﻫﺪ ﮵ﺔ ﮲‬
‫ﻣﮟ اﻟﻤﻬﺎم‪ .‬وﻫﺬه اﻟﻤ ﮲ﻈﻮﻣﺔ ﺣ﮳ ﻤ ﮵ﻠﺔ ﺣ﮳ ّﺪا‬
