Worksheet – C Std 8th ( Maths ) Topic: Algebraic Expressions and Identities

Q1. What degree does x3 - x2y2 - 8y2+ 2 have? 1 Mark

1. 2
2. 3
3. 4
4. 7
Ans: 3. 4
Solution
The given quadratic polynomial:
x3 - x2y2 - 8y2 + 2
To find, the highest degree of the polynomial = ?The degree of x3 = 3
The degree of x2y2 = 2 + 2 = 4
The degree of 8y2 = 2 andThe degree of 2 = 0
∴ The highest degree of the given polynomial = 4
Hence, the highest degree of the given polynomial = 4
Q2. An algebraic expression that contains only one term is called: 1 Mark
1. Monomial
2. Binomial
3. Trinomial
4. None of the above
Ans: 1. Monomial
Solution:
2x is a monomial

Q3. Nisha tries to make one of the three identities from (x + a)(x + b) = x2 + (a + b) x + ab by
replacing b by -a. Whichidentity did she obtain by this? 1 Mark
1. (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab+b2
2. (a - b)2 = a2 - 2ab + b2
3. a2 – b2 = (a + b) ( ab )
4. (x + a)(x + b) = x2 + (a + b) x + ab remains same

Ans: 3. a2 - b2 = (a + b)(a - b)

Solution
(x + a)(x + b) = x2 + (a + b) x + ab replacing b by -a we get(x + a)(x - a) = x2 + (a + a) x
+ a (- a) = x2 - a2
It is similar to a2 - b2 = (a + b) (a - b)

Q4. Tick (✓) the correct answer:(2x + 3)(3x - 1) = ? 1 Mark

1. (6x2 + 8x - 3)
2. (6x2 + 7x - 3)
3. 6x2 - 7x - 3
4. (6x2 - 7x + 3)
Page No.: 1 www.drhomibhabha.com
Ans: 2. (6x2 + 7x - 3)
Solution:
(2x + 3)(3x - 1)
= 6x2 - 2x + 9x - 3
= 6x2 + 7x – 3

Q5. Tick (✓) the correct answer: 1 Mark

If x = 10, then the value of (4x2 + 20x + 25) = ?
1. 256
2. 425
3. 625
4. 575
Ans: 3. 625
Solution:
x = 10
= (4x2 + 20x + 25)
= (2x)2 + 2 × 2x × 5 + (5)2
= (2x + 5)2
= (2 × 10 + 5)2
= (20 + 5)2
= (25)2
= 625

Q6. A polynomial contains number of terms: 1 Mark

1. One
2. Two
3. Three
4. Any
Ans: 4. Any
Solution:
A polynomial can contain any number of terms, one or more than one.

Q7. The product of 5x and 3y is: 1 Mark

1. 15xy
2. 5xy
3. xy
4. 2xy
Ans: 1. 15xy
Solution:
(5x)(3y) = 15xy

Q8. Volume of a rectangular box (cuboid) with length = 2ab, breadth = 3ac and height = 2ac is:
1. 12a3bc2 1 Mark
2. 12a3bc
3. 12a2bc
4. 2ab + 3ac + 2ac
Page No.: 2 www.drhomibhabha.com
Ans : 1. 12a3 bc2
Solution
We know that, volume of a cuboid = Length × Breadth × Height
= 2ab × 3ac × 2ac
= (2 × 3 × 2)ab × ac × ac
= 12 × a × a × a × b × c × c
= 12a3 bc2

Q9. The like terms of the following are: 1 Mark

1. ab, 9ba
2. ab, - 5b
3. -5b, 9ba
4. ab, - 3a
Ans: 1. ab, 9ba

Q10. Pqr is what type of polynomial? 1 Mark

1. Monomial.
2. Binomial.
3. Trimonial.
4. None of these.
Ans: 1. Monomial.
Solution:
Since the given polynomial is simply the product of p, q and r
⟹ it contains only one term
( ∵ for more than one term, there should be algebraic operators + and -)
⟹ Given polynomial is a monomial.
