What Is a Laptop Wireless Card?

By Ava Fails

A laptop wireless card allows you to connect to the Internet without a cable connection via a signal transmitted by a
wireless router or cell tower. Laptop wireless cards can either be a built-in component or an external device.

What You Need to Connect

To connect to the Internet wirelessly at home, you need Internet service via a modem, a wireless router, a laptop
computer and a laptop wireless card. To connect using a wireless hot spot, you need a laptop and a laptop wireless card.

Wireless Protocols
There are four wireless protocols: A, B, G and N, that vary in speed, compatibility and apply only to home networking. The
most important thing to remember is that your wireless router must support the same protocol as your laptop wireless
card.

Built-In Wireless Cards

Modern laptops come with wireless cards built in. Laptops purchased directly from a wireless Internet provider have
built-in laptop wireless cards that connect to the Internet using a signal from a cell-phone tower.

External Wireless Cards

External wireless cards connect to your laptop using your PCI slot, PCI Express slot or USB port. External laptop wireless
cards connect to your home network or wireless hot spots, or can connect to the Internet using a signal from a cell-phone
tower.

Wireless Internet Providers

All of the major cell-phone service providers also offer wireless Internet options. Obtaining a laptop wireless card from
these providers works the same way as purchasing a cell phone and calling plan.

How to Use a Dish Network WiFi

By Stephen Lilley
Updated September 28, 2017

Using a Wi-Fi connection supplied by Dish Network is a fast and easy way to get your laptop or desktop computer on the
Internet. Connect via Dish Network Wi-Fi and you can access the web anywhere in the house. This can save you the hassle
of buying lengthy Ethernet cords that limit you to within a certain range of your cable modem or router.

Make sure your computer has a wireless Internet card, either built in or as a plug-in adapter. This allows your computer to
pick up the signals being sent and received by your wireless Dish Network router and connect to the Internet. If you have
a laptop purchased in the last few years it will most likely have a wireless card inside. Usually only newer desktop
computers come with these cards installed.

Click on the "Start" menu on the lower-left side of your Windows computer's desktop. Select the "Network" option from
the list that appears.

Right-click on the icon that represents your wireless networking card. Select the option that reads "View All Wireless
Networks."

Open your web browser and type in any web address you can think of. If the page loads successfully, you are connected
to your Dish Network Wi-Fi.
