Time: 3 Hours Year: 2024

Instructions

1. This paper consists sections A and B with a total of eight (8) questions.

2. Answer all questions in section A and two (2) questions from section B.

3. Section A carries sixty (60) marks and section B carries forty (40) marks.

4. All work done in answering each question must be shown clearly.

5. Mathematical tables and non-programmable calculators may be used.

6. Cellular phones and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in the examination

room.

7. Write your Examination Number on every page answer booklet(s).

SECTION A (60 MARKS)
Answer All questions in this section
1. a. A continuous random variable x, takes values between 0 and 3 only, and its
probability density function is f(x) = kx 2 (3 − x). Find
(i) The value of constant k.
(ii) The mean and standard deviation.
(iii) Sketch f(x)
b. (i) A random variable assumes values x, prove that 𝑉𝑎𝑟(𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏) = 𝑎2 𝑣𝑎𝑟 (𝑥).
(ii) Give four conditions for an experiment to be called binomial experiment.
c. A bowl contains 3 white balls and 2 black balls, two balls are drawn randomly with
replacement. Find the probability that
i) One ball is white and one ball is black.
ii) Both balls are black or white.
2. a. Use laws of algebraic to show that (𝑝 ↔ 𝑞) ↔ 𝑝 is a tautology.
b. Simplify then re-write the following sentences using implication (→) notation
"~(∼ pv~q)vp".
c. Determine the truth value(s) of the following
i. If 2 < 1, then − 4 > −8
ii. It is not true that 4 + 5 = 6 𝑖𝑓 2 + 2 = 5
d. Test the validity of the argument; if there is a high concentration in the internal
examinations students will pass in their final examination. If students pass in their
final examination, then there is no cheating, but there is cheating. Therefore, there
is no high concentration in the internal examinations.
3. a. Prove that the angle inscribed in a semicircle is a right angle.
b. Find the projection of the force 𝐹 = 2𝑖 + 2𝑗 onto x – axis.

c. The velocity of a body at time t is given by 𝑣 = 3𝑡 2 − 2𝑡𝑗 + 4𝑘. Find the

expression for acceleration and the displacement of the body at time t, given that
when 𝑡 = 1, 𝑠 = 3𝑖 + 𝑗 + 2𝑘.

d. Find the constant c which makes vector 6 𝑖 − 3𝑐𝑗 + 3𝑘 orthogonal to vector

4. a. Given that the complex number is purely imaginary. Prove that in the Argand
